By Davey Coombs GAINESVILLE FL, MAR. 3 , ~ ew Je r se y Pro-Am priva te er Barry Carsten topped two m ain W ev ents at th e 1995 AMA / Worid Sports Am ateur N ational Su pe rcross at Ga torback Cycle Park, an event often ref e rred to as th e D aytona Am ateur Supercross, Ca rsten top pe d the 125cc A and 25+ A cl a s s e s aboar d a M ontgom eryville Cycle/MSR-backed Suzuki RM125 on the Friday before the facility h osted th e o pen ing ro und of the 1995 AMA N at io n al Motocross Champions hip Series for pro fessionals. "They were h a v in g D u n lop D a y practice over th ere on the big track bu t it was hot and d usty and prob ably a little bit cro w ded ," explained Carsten of h is reason for be ing in this race, "so I d ecided to just enter the amateur supercross an d have fun all day instead. I t's a good track and a I go t a lot of rid ing in - an d I made $400 fro m Su zu ki in conti ngency money!" The course used for th e event, which was p resen te d by Suzu ki , was set u p next to the st arti ng li ne used for the a ctual mo toc ross t r a ck . Th e M ark "Bomber" Barnett supercross circuit is u sed severa l tim es a yea r an d h as its own starti ng ga te and g ran dsta n ds . It has all th e tra p pings of a real su per cross track, tho u gh most of th e dou ble and tri p le jum ps a re a ma teur-frien d ly in d es ig n . And it a lso featu res a cl assi c over -under br id ge, once a sta ple on the professional supercross circuits . Carst en's 125cc A class wi n came at th e ex pense of Pennsylvania Pro-Am p ilot Mich ael McDo nald, another regular visitor o n th e p ro fessional scene. Carsten took th e early lead in the shortened four-lap main event and crossed the over -u nder b rid ge as the victor. M cD on ald bettered Ge orgia's Chris topher Bailey for se cond w ith Suzu ki-mounted C h ad M urphy sco r ing fo urth . In the 25+ A r a n ks Ca rs ten wa s forced to fol low everyo n e o n th e fi rs t la p after getting tan gled in the slick first tum w ith a fallen rid er . But before the halfw ay m ark in th e ra ce th e ve te ran Suz u ki rider had the lead and was well o n h is way to th e w in in th e 17- ri der class . Flori d a's own Jeff Reyn o ld s was secon d with Suzuki-mou n te d Rodney Carrier of Kentucky takin g third. Carsten passed on the 250cc A clas s, leavi ng Mc Donald a s the pre-race favo ri te . Howe ver, th e 23-y e a r -o ld Pennsylva nian could not match the pace of Bailey, who glided to the wi n in both th e heat race and main event. McDo nal d was again second wi th Cary West taking the thi rd and final podium spot. "There was some good riders in my class, but I was able to get in the lead at th e beginning and get away ," sa id the Ma ry la nder. " It's a reall y good su percro ss track an d the jum ps are se t u p to ha ve fun on. It was a littl e slick an d dry tod ay but everyone h as to ride on th e same track, I guess." Kawasaki-mounted Ben Ridd le wa s seco n d behi nd Pa strana and H ond a rider Cha d Albri tton was th ird. Delawar e's Joe Dellaversano wa s th e The 51cc Auto Stock class for sevenand eig ht-year-olds was led by Michael Lozaw, w ho bl ast ed his Cob ra flyer to th e m ain even t wi n in fro n t of seven o ther g ro m mets. LEM-moun ted Travis Wi nebren ner wa s secon d w ith So u th Carolina 's Jake Griffis - ano ther Co bra rider - ho ld ing down third at the finis h. Lozaw also top ped the Su per Pee Wee class with young Ricky Renner th e ru nner-u p and Alabama's Bradley Wright placing third. In the 51cc Auto Stock, for reall y little kids, Renner was the winner on a Yamaha with Wang Ha ynes second and Georgia' s Jam es Graham thi rd . Jumpi ng to th e other end of the age spe ctru m, Barry Mayo of Michigan was the fastest o f the Senio rs, taking th e main event win in the Senior 40+ grou p ahead of Ohio's Henry Gref an d Hond am ounted Cha rles Lehi ng . Georgia 's Gary Grah am w as the Vet 35+ wi n ner wi th Ohio tourist Kenneth Franken be rry second and local Vet Steven Dixo n th ird . Top Kawasaki 65cc class rider w as Mississip pi's Nathan Davenport, who led Georgia's Wes Segars and Ind iana's Brad Ripple at the checkered flag . The top 125cc B Inte rm ed iate rid er was Team G reen no r thern fa vorite Charles Du n aw ay, w ho m ade th e trip south from Ohio to notch the m ain event win in th e 24-rider class. Tex as-based Caleb Leath was th ird in th e heat race beh ind Flo ri da loca l hotshoe Ken neth Jones but moved up in to second in th e m ain eve nt. Third went to another fast local, Yamaha-mounted Ronnie Ren ner, with Su zu ki rid er Darren McE lha ttan an d Jones rou nding ou t the top five.
