indoor trial win of the year, as well as a whopping 86-poi nt lea d in t he FIM Indoor World Cup point standings. Winning the Barcelona indoor had become a fixation for the Spaniard last year, and his desire to repeat the win at this year's event was said to be incredibly intense. So, it was no surprise to see him in top form and solidy on top of the event. .H am absolutely thrilled to have won I in Barcelona for the second time , and to have gained this victory for the Montesa team, " said Colomer. "They are working without.limit, and deserved a win here. I feel that my victory here has been more important for my Montesa team than for me, even though I have managed to extend my championship point lead. H Colomer dripped sweat as he said those words, and was promptly mobbed by his family and friends soon after. It was a clear reflection of the significance of this victory for the man from Sant Estere d'en Bas. . With his second-consecutive victory, Colomer st retched his lead in the World Cup Indoor Championship to a comfortable 86 points. Colomer's nearest rival, six-time World Champion jordi Tarres, failed to make the final and could do nothing but watch as Colomer rode to the win. Colomer was modest in victory, preferring to focus on what this win meant for Montesa. Even though the Montesa factory sits a few short miles from the Palau Sant [ordi stadium, thei r last victory in this classic trial was in 1985, at the hands of a brilliant young rider named Andreu Cod ina, who is now an international sales manager for the rival Gas Gas factory. Tarres stormed out ready to capture what would have been his ninth victory in the eve nt, but three fives on the first lap dissolved all of his options. Well below the normal Tarres standard, his perform ance included the three first-lap fives, and numerousdabs leading to his early de parture from the program. And it was a de parture that was painful for h is fan s, and even more so for Ta rres himself. It was the first time since his debut in the 1985 ed ition of this even t, where he also fail ed to make th e cu t, that Ta rres was eliminated in the firs t round Colomer, Steve Colley and joan Pons were the men who would battle for the win on the final and decisive lap. Predictions would be tough to make, due to the fact that three new and difficult obstacles would be added to the eightsection la p . Colomer w ould " a ke it m clear right away that this was his and Montesa's night. Toyin g with perfection, Colomer logged eigh t consecu tive cleans to finish the first part of the playoff with a perfect score. Pons and Colley, try as they m ight, could not keep th e pace with the mercurial Colomer and his Montesa. A da b here and three there and the Gas Gas pair could only watch helplessly as Colomer pulled away. . . Colomer's first error came on the new section nine, when he carded a five and gave Pons and Colley one last ray of hope, But they too would fail on the most difficult hazard of the night, ending their hopes of victory. The final three section, the high jump and the two side-by-side speed sections, were acad emic and served only to punctuate Colomer's dominance.
