As the " fathe r" of motocross schools, Bailey has in recen t years branched ou t in to th e instructional video marke t, mak ing it poss ib le for everyone to "atten d" one of his sch ools. Bailey can be seen at man y supercross and na tional even ts throu gh ou t the year wi th camcorder in hand . Bu t Bailey d oesn't just film the race - he us ually films only certain parts of a rid er 's body as he races by . Why? Because the Professor has a way of noticing and analyzing things that most people would not. Filming a rider's feet as he blasts thro ugh a whoop secti on may he lp Bailey analyze w here the fastest racers stand on their pegs, and zooming in on a rider's upper body may reveal the bes t body positioning for railing through a rutted comer. Simply p u t, Bailey is a master of figuring out what does, and doesn't work. In hi s latest video crea tion, "Holeshots: Getting Out First ," Bailey dissects the fast- starting techniques of many of today's top professionals through close observation of each rider's suunngtecluUque. . How many times have you actually practiced starts? I for one, must admit tha t the only time I used to practice starts were on race day. According to Professor Bailey, though, a start is actually 70% of the race on a normal race day, and up to 90% in muddy or dusty conditions. "It 's the only place where you can pass all of your competitors on a single straightaway," he explains. It makes sense, doesn't it? In the video, Bailey offers several tips that can make a world of difference. Among the subjects covered are proper gear selection, which fingers to use on the clu tch lever, proper bod y positioning, and throttle control/clutch modulation. But blasting out of the gate is stiR on ly part of a good sta rt - Bailey also explains how to pick a good starting gate, and how to successfully maintain your good jump through the all-important first tum. Attitude? Of course, the right attitude can make a tremendous difference, and Bailey covers mental preparation as well. Making all of this information easier to understand are Bailey's video clips. As he explains each technique, many familiar pro riders are shown do ing exactly what he dictates. Just as entertaining are the cl ip s of several "non-star" riders doing exactly what he says not to. When you keep your eyes alert, it is easy to see the d ifference between th e right and wrong techniques. Oka y, so all of the basics that I've mentioned so far are common knowledge, right? Well, there's one mor e little secret that the Professor offers that makes all the difference in the world. Wan t to know wha t that little secret is? "Holes hots: Getting Out First," costs $16.95, and is available from Gary Bailey Videos and MX School, Dept. eN, P.O. Box 130, Axton, VA 24054, 703 / 6501759, FAX 703/ 650-2120. And trust me, though I lea rned Bailey's "secret" while attending one of his MX schools, the video does just as good a job of teach ing the p roper s ta rti ng technique. Sinc e attendi ng Ba il e y ' s school, the proper techn iq ue that I learned has consistently propelled me to the front of the pack - through the first tum, at least.
