Defend ing ICE Cha mpion Charlie Venegas started the 1995 World Cup ICE Spee dway Series

speed way riders before 5000 specta tors.
Venegas set the pace early by hand ily winning the first heat . He returned to the track for
Heat 9, and once again Venegas gassed it off the
line to take the lead and the win ahead of Ronn y
Kemp, Dou g C reyson and Vance Felicio. Venegas carne back and cinched his berth in the main
with a nother w ire- to-wire victory over Robert
Curry in Heat 18. Pall Litt and Creg Ayers were
in the heat but tangled and went down.
Venegas earned the pole pos ition in the main
event and po wered off the line to grab an ea rly
lead . With nothin g but clear ice in front of him,
Venegas rod e flawlessly to the checkered flag.
Kemp ran a d ose seco nd b ut could n' t m ake an
atte mpt on Ven egas becau se a persistent John
C rant kept Kemp busy defend ing his positi on.
Fourth-placed Otto Blair was off the pace a bit
but had his neph ew, Buck Blair, covered all the
way to the flag.

(14-15) class d u ring the amateu r supercross at
the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome p rior to
the evening 's profession al race. Tempera tur es
well below the freezing point ou tside the dome
didn't keep rid ers away, as the AMA /World-
pe tin g o n the exact sa me t rack that the p ros
would race on later in the evening . Rema rkably, .
the fuJI slate of racing. which began around 8
a.m., conclu ded by noo n wi th all classes ru nning
two motos.
At the start of the first moto in the 85cc (1415) class. a trio o f Ka wa sakis incl u di ng Nick
Delozier, Jona tha n Weisz. and Sampso n battled
for the lead in the firs t co mer. A wh oo p sec tion
right after the bend cost Delozier the lead as he
slipped to third, selling u p the battle to come

Sampso n made his final move, getting beside
Weisz and then sneaking to the inside of a corner on the straightaway. That set up the finishing order with Sampson taki ng the win, Weisz

Weisz finis hed right on Sampso n's rear wheel
when the checkered flag fell. Delozier again finish ad a lon ely th ird . and Jake Beissel moved
through the pack enough to take fourth in the
mot o.
"I wa s hopping d u ring the race he (Weisz)
would n' t do the d oubles because I wasn 't , and
luckily he didn't," Sampson said . "I'd like to
than k my mom an d my sponso rs (or making
this win possib le. This is the first time that I've
beaten him (Weisz)."
