Chester burns Asheville Indoor Motocross By Jay and Sharon Hauser ASHEVIllE, NC, JAN. 21·22 Suzu ki of Gastonia-s upported Jim Chester was unaffected by the cold mo untain tem peratures that gr eeted over 670 riders and do mi na ted ro u nd s fou r a n d five of th e Vict o ry Sp o rts / WKSF Kiss Co untry FM 99.9 Indoor Motocross Series. . Chester was the hottest ride r on the track as he blazed his way to three out of four Pro ma in event wins to take home the largest pa ycheck of the Pro riders. Florid a' s new est tra nsp lan t from Cana da, Bill Walin, was the only rider that was able to pu t the brakes on Chester 's attemp t at a sh u tou t; Wallin took the 250cc Pro main even t win on Saturda y nig ht. . When Satu rday's 125 cc Pro ma in even t rolled around, Shane Slother timed the gate pe rfectly and was gone, leaving the freight train of Che st er, Hansen, and Wall in in h is ro ost . Ha nse n was the firs t to give way, as Wallin s lip ped in to third to chase after Sio ther and Chester, while Hansen was now left fighting for position with the rest of the 14-ride r field. Sla ther was able to lead the ma in for over eigh t laps until a stoked up Jim Chester kicked it into high gear and shot by to lead the remaining four laps. Slother held on for a great ride to take second ove r Wallin. Mike Nutter quietly worked his way into fourth p lace, with Hansen working his way back past Walker and Templeton to captu re fifth. Most of the names were the same in the 250cc main, but the results definitely were not. Wallin rode like clockwork as he grabbed the holeshot of the 250cc Pro main and simp ly refused to look back . Chester was the only rider to even com e close to WaI1in. bu t he still fell short in the end. Templeton netted a hard-eamed third, while Walker look fourth. World 250cc Championship contender Billy ules, back in the U.S. a fter a four-month layoff, finished fifth . Tight racing was the ord er of the da y in Sun d ay' s Pro main s as well, but it was the Jim Chester show all the way . Chester had to conten d with Templeto n again for the 12Sec Pro main victory until contact between the two riders on lap six put Templeton on the ground and all owed Ches ter to ta ke the w in. Chester also wen t on to score the 250ccPro main evcnt win. Results Saturday : 50 (4--6) 1. Buddy Biajl (Yam) ; 2. ChaseBt.'Ck (ICTM); 3. 8inny Orrell (Yam) ; 4. Pat Cabenh.ut(Iij ); 5. For 30 Years. ~~ America's Weekly Motorcycle N ewspap er SALEM, OR, JAN. 21 Dennis Sweeten proved that he had what it took when the goin g go t tough at the Salem Indoor Trial on the Oregon State Fairgrounds, as Sweeten pu lled out the Expert win ove r Lonny Ha llsted by one point. The event, round th ree of the four-round series, proved to be tough, as only two riders we re allowed in the arena at a time and had only six minu tes to complete the five long sec-. tions tha t made up the course. Sections were ridden forward and reverse three times , with the riders tack1ing sections that included a huge log jam. earthmove~ tires , IS-foot pyramids , a car and a va n, and a 35-foo t train of giant wirespools. Sweeten. and H allsted easily rode their Betas through loop on e w ithout ta kin g a point, but Hal lsted dabbed in an easy log jam section while hotdogging for the fans. Sweeten also picked up a point, forcing the overall to come down to the last loop. Sweeten went first and cleaned every section, while Hallsted was for<:ed to dab again after getting too close to the edge of the tires he was negotiating. The mistake cost HaIlsted the win. Intermediate rider Dennis Tollefson smoked the rest of his class by 20 points. Mike Moore was close behind until halfway through the event, when he missed a dow n- ramp in section three and fell four feet to the ground. The crash broke Moore' s bar-damp and prevented him from finishing the event. Dale Tollefson was second. In the Novice class, Gene Chitham tied wi th Monte Ebc, bu t Ebc took the wi n wi th mor e cleans. John Cheney took third place on a fourstroke RTL250. "" Results EX: 1. Dennis Sw~ten (1); 2.
