Davis ~ founder of Ter rycable - and the rest of his class started on the sa me line as the "kid s" in the Vet Expe rt div ision. Leading the pack into turn one was Vet Expert Brad Mcleod, followed by Calif orn ia Racing Club's number-o ne- plate hold er Leo Saul. Da vis was next with Randy Titlem ier, jack Rolen and the rest of the la rge Senior class in tow. As the rid ers cleared the step-up leading into a triple roll er , Sau l made hi s only bid for the lead when h e trie d to jump past McLeod . It rrught' ve wo rked except for the fact that he also ca rried the extra speed in to the comer, forcin g him to the outside of the berm and leavi ng the inside line ope n for Mcleod. As the ride rs beg an their trek into the back section, McLeod had already opened up some bre athing room on Saul , and by the tim e the y reappeared fr om th e ca ny o n , McLeod h ad pu lled out of the Yamaha rider's sight. Davis was a strong third until he stalled his KX250 in the tight hairpi n corner leading up to the scoring- tower chicane. Rolen took advantage of thi s and motored by, but Davi s wa s u nd er power before los ing more position s. Davis quick ly closed the gap on Rolen, bu t get ting by the Yamaha rider proved to be more of a challenge. For the next three laps the t w o battled ba ck a nd fo rt h; w ith Davis pu lling al ongs ide of Rol en agai n and ag ain. Davi s wa s determ ined th ou gh , a nd at th e 30minute mark of the 45-minute-plu s-one-lap race, made a clean pass, retaking the Senio r Expert lead . Gary Dog gett, jim Lat endresse and Bill Carr had their own race for third going, the trio . taying close the enti re race. s McLeod too k the white flag while dodging tappers. and had worked his way up through the beginn ers, no vices and was now behind the third plac e Vet Int ermed iat e rid er , wh ile Saul wa s a di stant seco nd . Davis. taki ng the white flag. looked ar ound but d id not see Rolen, wh o had fa ile to reappear from the back section on d the last lap . Thi s mo ved up th e rest of the class con tenders one slot, and now Doggett was running in the number-tw o Senior Expert slot. II Pau l Krause and his KXSOO sailed to an easv win at th e Dirt Diggers M.C. Win te r Hare~ ha re scra mb les at the Red Moun tain OHV area. The eigh th annu al Winter Hare, which is trad itiona lly held under moist conditions, was the last event o f the year for the A.'AA District 37 racing series. Nearly 250 riders show ed up to ba ttle the d ust and to collect crucia l, year-end po ints . The Dirt Diggers laid out a Sa-mile loop that cove re d hill s, ro cks, h igh-speed ro ad s, sand was hes and lot s of virgin terr ain . Dus t turned ou t to be a major factor in the event also. "We get rain almost every year for our race," said Tom Hammond , the dub preside nt. "1 was hopi ng for more than just so me sp rin kles last nigh t, but I guess not." At the start, Krause and his Kawasaki teammate Rex Staten crested the top of the mile-long uph ill bom b running neck and neck on their 0!Vn separate trail s. Howe ver, by the time the two hot lines filtered down to one, Krause was in front of the hard-charging Staten. "1 was right on Krause's rear whee l afte r the bomb," said Sta ten, who had alread y sec ured the District 37 number- on e Vet plate in ea rly No vember. Aro u nd the second chec k. Krau se threw up a rock, and it brok e my gas filter. My bike sta rted boggi ng do wn , so I had to stop and cut the overflow hose from the gas tank and use it as a gas line. Six or seven guys passed me while I was stopped ." As Krause finished the first lap and left the pits to complete the second, he had opened up a one-min ute lead over Baumann. Wind ha m had not yet rece ived his factory YZ250, so Pete Watson of Broad way Yama ha in Ty le r, Texas, br ought o u t a n ew YZ250 fo r Wind ham to compe te on . The first moto of the 2SOcc Expert class came in ea rly in the d ay ' s p rogram. Bill y Whitley gra bbed t he ho les hot, w hile t he Yamaha I Axo /Max ima /Dunlop-bac ked Wind ham followed hi m into the first tum. Windham passed Whi tley by the end o f the first lap a nd led the race to the checkered flag, followed by Whitley, Billy Akers and Roy Schellenberg er. Steve Smit h was first off the line, closely followed by the rest of the AA class. At the e nd of the first of fou r mud d y la ps. it was Summer s, followed by four-time Natio nal Cha mp ion Terry Cu n ning ham and Du a ne Con ner. Last year's series chilmpion, Robert Patter son , was fou rth, w ith round -tw o winn e r Do ug Jones rou ndi ng out the top five. On the second lap, Summers stretched it out to abo u t a four-minute lead over Yamahil ridcrs Conn er and Cu nni ng ha m. Patt er son was kee ping pace until he smashed a rad iator on a tree, e ndi ng his d ay.
