United S Arenacross series ports Speedway USA debuts Arenacross Series By Michael Maher Ph oto s by Nikki Bailey VIcroRVILLE, CA, DEC. 3 hen former speedway racin g champion Gene Woods took over the Speed way USA race track at the San Bernardino County.Fairgrounds ' in Victorv ille, California, the track had . already seen several owners uns uccessfully try to make it work. ' But in the years since, Woo ds has turned the track into one of the most popular venues on the South ern California speedway circuit: With an o the r su ccessfu l year of speed way behind him, Wood s has now decided to try something new and different: arenacross. Turning the Speedway USA oval into a motocross course, Woods and compan y ha ve launched W 76 the first United Sports Arenacross Series. . "The race track was just sitting dormant all winter, and my daughter needed a place to race," Woods said . "In my opinion, arena cross is a viable spectator spo rt, but you have to ha ve the right facility to do it; We did." When the inaugural event was over, one rider had firmly established himse lf as the crowd favo rite, as Cory Keeney pu t in th e two best rides of the afte rnoon only to come up short at the end. In the 125cc Pro clas s Keeney won the first moto after battling with Jimmy Lavorci and found himself locked in a struggle with Lavo rci for the wi n in moto two . The two riders raced side by side as th ey came through th e tr icky double jump, but as the y dove into a tight right-hand tum, they collided and Keeny stalIed for a moment. Wh en Keeney got going again , he b la sted through the pack and soon was back on Lavorci's rear wheel, but Keen ey just couldn't Seem to make the pa ss despite several valiant attem p ts. In the end, Lavorci took the win an d, combined with his second place in the first moto, . too k the overall in the class o ver Keeney. The 125cc Expert class ran along with the Pro class, with Joe Ryan combining 1-2 moto scores to take the class. In the Open Pro division it was again Keeney who played a starring role, with Lex Malan playin g the ne mesis th is time, in a race that looked like a sequel to the 125cc Pro finale. Keeney wen t into the second moto having won the first, and again he had trouble in the same tum while fighting for the lead . This time, he slid up too high and clobbe red a hay bale, costing him a few seconds. He quickl y got going and rocketed up th rough the field to catch the leader Malan. The pair put on a stellar battle, but like before, Keeney just couldn't quite must er the oomph to get around and once again he had to settle for second place, as Malan scored the class win . a Results PIW: 1. j.R. Thai seemed to be the questio n of the day, but the results were not in doubt, as the Team Honda /l-8OO-COUECT-sponsored rider posted a double moto sweep of the 125a: Pro class during round three of the GFI Dealers Series a t Perris Raceway. Sources inside the factory cam p said that all McGrath's 250cc race machines were und ergoin g crank transplants, replacin g the OEM part with an up grad ed factory version of the same uni t, wh ich necessitated the switch. The firs t 125cc Pro rac e sa w a su rp rise holes hol by Ryuichi Yama da on his new Honda while Jason McCormick and McGrath followed in pursuit ~cGrath tu rned up the jui ce a nd quickly passed McCormick for second but was surprised a few turns later when McCormick smashed into him near the finish-line tum and took back the second spot. McGra th repassed McCormick for second, then a few turns later took the lead from Yamada . McCormick kept the p ressure on McGrath for the next five laps, but he even tually faded off the pace and into the sights of Hond a of Troy-backed James Dobb. . By this poin t in the race, early leade r Yamada slipped back in the pack.McGrath wen t on for the molo win wh ile McCormi ck outrode Dobb for second. The fina l 12Scc mot o saw Dobb pull th e holeshot but his lead was short-lived . Before the end of the first lap, b o th McCormick a nd McGra th motored b y. McGra th passed McCormick on the th ird lap, but like the first moto, McCormick was n't about to lay down and quickly retalia ted by shov ing his front tire into McGroth's leg. McGrath wasn't bothered by the incident and p ull ed away for another co nvinci ng victo ry . Lanny Sloan, Thompso n and Mark Webster battled for seco nd as they roosted their way around the track. Sloan mad e his pass on Thompson at the end of the "Wa usau Freeway," railing a fast outs ide line while Tho mpson foug ht the shorter, chopped up inside line. Webster was the next to mak e his move on Thompson, as he grabbed a handful of thro ttle to d ou b le jump h is way b y. Phill ip Wilk inso n sli pped his mea n green Kawasaki in to four th, and with that the lop five was set. As the ga te dropped for lh e seco nd moto, Willard gra bbed his hat and coat, and checked o ut, again leav ing Wilkinson, Sloan and Webs ter to decide w ho w o uld be runne r-up. Whi le Willard ran out fro nt, Wilk inson a nd Slo a n began a "ba ttle-roya le" tha t wo uld last the entire mo to. The specta tors were treated to some firstclass racing actio n as each rider tried new lines in an effort to get a round the other. Sloan eventuall y found the line he need ed to ma ke his pass slick bul Wilkinson hung tough, p ressing hard to the end. As the checkered flag waved, Wilkinson cr ossed the fin is h line and collapsed , exhaus ted from giving it his all. In the 125a: D class, new comer Nick Thomas nailed the first-mote holeshot and disappeared. Thoma s recently gradua ted fro m the minicycle ranks a n d is showing good speed, adapting quic kl y to h is CR12S. Brian Kelly and Phillip Allen frei gh t-trai ned arou n d in se cond and third, as Jerry Merrill moved up through the field after a slow start. Thomas stayed ou t front , taking the win over Kelly and Allen. Merrill holesh ot the second mot o, with Allen a nd Kris Zep ecki in tow. Allen a nd Zepecki hammered on each o ther as Th omas made a fu rious cha rge th rou gh the pack after a disastrous start. Merri tt held on for the moto win and the ove rall , w ith Allen rid ing a con sistent second. Women's MX Team me mbe r Corina Chi nen, bu t Chinen racked up ye t another victory with her dominance of the Pro class . Ch in en hol eshot mota one, leaving in her wake a host of hopefuls jockeying for position. Rounding the first tu m wereLee.Ann Vanderpool, local favorite Becky Kukla, Bonnie Warch and. talented amateur field . Ch inen left little d oubt o f h er i m m in e n t d ominance, as s he blast ed ar ound th e tr ack . The pursu ing pack put up a futil e effort to contain Chinen, with Van derpool, Kukl a and W.rch d icing for th e runner-up spo t. Kuk la held second with Vanderpool.nd Warc h looking for an ope ning, bul Kuk la repeatedly sla m med the door on their attempts. Undaunted, they continued to probe for any w eakness , and Vanderpool passed Kuk la only to bobble withi n the lap and allow Kuk la and Warch to sli p by. Recovering qu ickly, Vanderpool charged back and passed both riders, only to run into a lap ped rider and sur.. re nder second back to Kukla. Wa rch se ttled in to fourth p lace, electing to save her energy for the next moto.
