Lawrence passed Brown and the battle
began. Lawrence wanted the win bad ly,
b ut co uldn't get b y Smail, w ho was

on lap six. His determina tion pa id off
as he mad e a pass on Brown to take over
third. Smail continued to lead , and with
fi ve laps to go , La w rence knew h e
had to make a move. With th e fa n s
sc reami ng, the two rid ers hammered
the w ho op section si de by si de. They
mad e co n tact and Lawrence went to
the ground, knocking him unconscious.
The race wa s red-flagged on th e 15th
lap, and the results were declared final ,
Smail won with Schnell second, Brown
third and Holland and Moural rounding
out the top 10.
Holland had a so re shoulder bu t
didn't need a trip to the hospital.

dominated the 125 and 2SOcc classes, respectivel y, at the Reno Livestock Center' s Arenocross. Each rid er
won his d ivision on both Friday and
Satu rd ay.
The su pe rcross-type track consisted
of gnarly whoop sections, d oubles, an
over-under section and a 70-foot triple.
A $10,000 Pro purse was posted.
Friday's 12Scc heat races sent six riders to the main. Rusty Holland, David
Pingree and Ryan Huffman won their
heat races, and runners-up Casey Johnson, Mike Brown and Lawrence also
made the direct transfer. Lowell Moural
Jr ., Cory Keeney, Greg Schnell and
Shane Esposito transferred via semis,
and the LCQ sen t Jeff Willoh.
The main proved to be intense, with
Holland pulling the holeshot. The
Kawasaki-mounted Lawrence - wearing
Suzuki riding gear pushed through
the grueling whoop section to take the
lead on lap four. Pingree also passed
Holland to take second. Mike Brown
had suffered a poor start, but managed
to move up to third by the 10th lap.
Passing 'in the tight turns requ ired

Moural ran fourth and fifth for most of
the race while Willoh held off Schnel l
fo r six t h. A t th e end of 15 laps,
Lawrence held off Pingree to emerge
victorious . Brown wa s third, ahea d of
Holland and Moural.
The 2SOcc qualifiers saw many of the
sam e riders, and Moural, Huffman, Ray
Crumb, Smail, Pingree, Holland , Brown ,
Cha d Burleson, Shawn Highlan d, Greg
Schnell and Shane Esposito all lined up
for the main.
When the gate dropped, Huffman
snagged the holeshot, but Smail quickly
took over. Br own gated fou rth and
chased down Moural and Huffman, settling in behind Sm ail after lap four.
Lawrence also passed Pingree and Huffman to move into a podium spo t.
The 20-Iap race was taking its toll on
some riders, but produced only a few
Iappers. Smail dominated the race, sailing over. the finish line with th e w in .
Brown was second while Lawrence settled for third. Pingree finished fourth
and Moural Jr. fifth.
Local firemen; police a nd s he riffs
provid ed the halftime entert a inment,
with the fire department taking the trophy. Some of the riders were su rprisingly fast. A Yamaha RTl OO was also raffled off courtesy of Yamaha Corpo ration
and Mi chael's Cy cl es of Reno. Ryan
Morals inspired the cr ow d in th e pee
wee exhibition race.
On Saturday, Lawrence continued
his tiddler dominance, winning his heat.
Pingree and Willoh tangled in the
whoop section at the start of their heat,
knocking each other out of contention.
Moural was another heat winner ahead
of rookie Burleson. Brown and Holland
also wo n, and Brit John Tidey rounded
out the field.
Law rence was relatively uncontested
in the main , with Brown crossing the
finish as the runner-up. Schnell got it all
together for third, followed by Holland
and Huffman. .
The 2SOcc main was the finale, pitting
the toughest, fastest, hungriest gate
of 12 to hit Reno thus far. The anxious
crowd was on its feet for th e start of

win in the Sportsman A class at the Tech nique
Tri a ls Club-promoted Leftov er Tu rkey Tria l,
held in the Co ugar Butt es area of Lucerne Valley. Miller , own er of Section On e Tr ials Product s and the U.S. import er o f Italian Fantic
mo torcycles , bested ru nner-up Sheldon Parker
with a slim two-point margin of victory, eight
to 10. " I had a feeli ng tha t I wa s doing pretty
well," sa id Miller. " Bu t wh en I had a clean
third loop, I figured I was in a good po sition to
win."
Miller started off the opening loop on a sou r
note, as he rode out of bounds and recei ved a
five in the fifth section. "Th ere was a guy taking
pictures. sai d Mill er . " And yo u know what
happens w he n someone points a came ra a t

you."
Miller regained his composure and turned in
a seven- poin t loop card, one be tter th an th e
eigh t-poin t scores of Parker a nd Waldo Weir.
Miller and Sheldon remained sepa ra ted by only
a s ingle poin t after tw o loops, as bo th riders
came home with one-point loops .
The third, and final loo p proved to be the
deciding factor. While Mill er rod e flaw lessly
a nd cleaned all 10 sections, Pa rker set his foo t
down once and saw his ch ances o f victory fad e
aw ay. In the end, it w as Mill er over Pa rker,
while Kevin Quine nabbed the third-p lace position with a tota l score of 13.
