And another I'm a trial s rid er yo u kn ow, one of th ose fu n ny g uys who go slow over rocks - or so most peo ple think. If the y s ubscribed to Cycle News, they would realize that trials tod ay is very different from d ays go ne by. Your coverage of Wo rl d Ro unds, Na tionals a nd lo ca l events is fantastic. I especially like the up-to-th e-m inu te Wor ld Roun d reports and the littl e ti d bi ts of information about the riders you are able to throw in. Keep up this level of coverage and journalism , and you've got yourself a subscriber for life. » Peter A. I would like to comme nd Cycle News on the accu r ac y of the report you gave regarding Doug Henry in the "In the Wind" section of the Sep tember 28 issue. It s ta ted tha t H en ry was going to come to Ha waii and learn to surf with Sunny Garcia, and in tum teach Sunny how to rid e. My friends and I read th e issue and thou ght it really wo uld n't happen. It was quit e a surprise to us all when he arrived at th e track on October 29 w ith Garcia . We d on't have the opportuni ty to see th e p ros ride because of our isolation in the. Pacific. Wha t was cool about the whole th ing is that Doug is a good person and a t r ue a mbassad o r to the sport. He signed plen ty of autographs, took pictures, and took time to jus t ta lk with anyone who wan ted to ask questions. Doug is the only p ro motocrosser I've ever met u p close an d I just hope all the other pros are just as cool. I jus t w ish I didn' t ha ve a brok en leg, so I cou ld have turned so me laps wi th him. James R. Cullen Jr. Ho no lu lu , HI Six Days afterthoughts Th e Tulsa Trailrid ers and friends d id not know a lot abo ut how to d eal with th e thou sands of s p ec ta tors, a n d it showed . We did not know much about d eali ng with the p ress an d they ha ve let the world know. But th er e is o ne thin g that we do know how to do - and w ith the help of m any - we put o n o ne h ell of a n enduro! Each and every rider that we have h ea rd fr om praised the even t. LeRoy Win ters said th is was the best organized Six Days he has atte nded. He sai d John Penton ex pressed the sa me opinion. Bill Bair d of th e AM A Congress, an d an all-time Alliga to r End uro grea t, sai d it was well done. Th e riders' opinions are w hat count with us, and from that perspective it appears an ou tstanding job was do ne by all. This is for all those spectators that ca me and were d isap p o inte d : T he Tulsa Trialriders and ou r friends are end u ro riders first and foremost. Nea rly all of ou r concen tra tio n went into this aspect of th e ISDE. If we had it to do over again, I'm not s u re how w e co ul d have done it d iffe ren tly. H ow could we tum seve ra l thousand people loose on 30,000 acres of privat e property th at w e d o n ot own, but ha v e ass u me d the responsibility for? How wou ld they get a ro u n d? In private veh icles, or on motorcycles? Can you imagi ne the traffic on the grav el roads, or the bikes in the way on the trails? How about the opening ceremony? Well, like I said, we ride end uros and so me ti mes do no t give th e w indow dressing the co nsidera ti o n it' s due . While I was not able to mak e it to the opening ceremo ny , I heard sornepeopIe say they liked it better than Ho lland or Sweden. I di d not see Sweden's, b ut I d id see Holland's , and was not imp ressed. Mos t of the criticism has come from those who are under the impression that we ha d excess fun ds to work with. We did no t! We received zero from the AM A, FIM , a nd th e g overnments . $18,000 is set aside for th e host club by th e FIM, but it goes through the AMA first. Apparentl y, this m oney is not going to make it to the Tu lsa Trail Riders. It is going to be very close, financially. Allow me to close by stating th at with the volun teers' help, we held the ultimate enduro a n d the ones th a t count - the rid ers -loved it. We had not one full-time person w orkin g on this even t. It was d one w ith 100% vol unteer effort, and it was well done! Skip Seal Tulsa, OK Thanks from the champ To th e people who made it possible for me to w in my third Nationa l Champions hip, it has been one of the best years in racing I ha ve ever had, and I feel that l owe everyone a great deal of app reciation.
