WA. NOV. 13 Na tiona lly ran ked AMA Experts Rex FIS and her Ch ris Fitzhu gh made ra re appearan ces a t the Clark County Fairgrounds Ind oor Short Track race, but instead of fmishing 1-2 in the Open Pro main as mo st anti cipated, it was Ya ma h amounted Ste v e Haug a nd Rota x ri der Jos h Curry clashin g for the first-place money. Fisher, the Na tional number-12-plate holder, had his woes begin in the Pro preliminaries, as h is Rota x refused to start. Borrowing a Bultaco Astro, Fisher finished third to Seattle-area riders Haug and Fitzhu gh in his heat . In the Open Pro main, Haug h ooked up best and wa s nev er headed. Fitzhugh made a three- lap run at him until unload ing while try ing to sneak a wheel underneath Hau g. Fish er was next to cha llenge Haug on ly to slide out himself. Th is all ow ed Curry to se ttle into second and challenge Haug for the victory but Haug was never headed. . The day wasn 't a total washout for Fitzhugh, thou gh , as the Na tional number-51-plate hold er won the 30+ A main . Fitzhugh also got revenge on teammate Hau g. as Fitzhugh got the jump on th e pa ck at th e sta rt and fended off ea ch of Haug's rallies. The two Expert rid ers put on a great sh ow, taki ng the first and second spots while Kenny McCann made it a Yamaha sweep of the top three . Honda-mounted Joe Lenz , another new comer to the series, rode spectacularly all day, winning the 250cc c1ass heat race and backin g it up with an imp ressive win in the main event Dregon's Rick Hill pushed Lenz in the earl y portions o f the I O-lap fina l, but each tim e Lenz would stretch out his lead , whi ch he ma intain ed to the checkered flag. Hill finished second while a battl e for third between Tim Ricketts Sr. and Dan Dickson went Ricketts ' way. MD. OCT.29-30 Halloween wee kend pro ved to be a real treat for two riders a t the Maryla nd State Championship Race at Budds Creek MX, as John Schneid er held of f a stro ng chall en ges to ta ke the 125cc an d Unlimited B titles. The two-day event was run with a two-mota forma t for A classes on Sunday and three mo tos ove r the two days for all others. In the 125cc B class, Paul Za n de r pulle d holeshots in motes one and two . It took several laps for Schneider to reach Zander's rear wheel. After pu tting up a stro ng defensive effort, Zande r yielded the lead to Schneid er for both wins. On Sunday, Schneide r was the first one around the hairpin tum on the start, and he built a substa ntial lead that allowed him to hold on to win when his exhaust pipe carne off on the next-tl>last lap . Zander finis hed a so lid second, with third going to Denn y Williams, founh to Daniel Miller and flfth to Robert Bowlin g. In the 125cc A class, pro rider Kevin Crine pulled both holeshots and ran wire to wire. Second was sp lit between Tom Welch an d Shawn Roth st ein , with the overall to Rothst ein . John Mock ex perienced mechanica l proble ms for a DNF In moto one but cam e back with a strong third in the second . Crine' s doubl e victory hopes proved to be a trick when after taking a clea r win in nioto one, his bike seized in the first lap of moto tw o and left the victory d oor ope n for Billy Schla g w ho took the title.
