·VO E : · . IC S::· America'sweekly motorcycle newspaper letters to the editor.. iewfinders says thanks t is said that an event is only as good as ts promoters. As Viewfinder s putting n the Castaic Lake Gran Prix , we can y it was the participants and sp ectaors that made the event spectacular . Our club needed to make a favorable pression on the Los Angeles County arks Department to secure future use of e park facility. The cleanliness and courtesy displayed by all those who attended e event made not only our jobs easy on ity and clean up, but should have left the necessary impression to keep our foot the door for next year. AlI who attendmost definitely dispelled any reservations that the parks department may have had about motorcycle groups being destructive and unruly. . A well deserved appreciation goes out to all the riders and their families and· friends . You made us look good, Many thanks and see you next year. Viewfinders MlC Templeton, CA Wanting World Superbike Given the contributions American riders have made to the World Superb ike Series, are there any plans for including the United States in the series? If so , what U.S. tracks meet the series' requirements? Also, does anyone presently have this motion on an agenda? Manuel Jonec San Diego, CA The FIM World Superbike Series calendar has the United States listed without a date and without a race track. The latest information says that the race is likely to take place at Laguna Seca in Monterey, California in either April or July, as a replacemen t" for the United States Grand Prix which is likely to move to Road America in Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin. Road America and Laguna Seca are the only road racefacilities in the country that have been approved by the HM...Editor. Godspeed, Ac e Motorcyclists in Georgia were recently saddened by the loss of a great friend and supporter when Don" Ace" Lassiter passed awa y on October 14 at the age of 60. Don, w ith son, Greg, and wife, Frieda, became regular figures in Georgia and Southeast motocross from the mid-70s to the mid-80s. Don was known for his wonderful senseof humor and story telling. Don and Greg su rvived near traged y when both were involved in a ter ribl e car accident on the way to a local MX event, but through it all Don's sense of humor alwa ys shined bright. I was fortunate to meet Don and his family at a young age , and a life-long friend ship soon developed. Don and his family treated me as a son and my life has been enriched by their friendship. I would like to thank the Lassiter family for everything they have done - Godspeed,Ace. Robert Leimenstoll Woodstock, GA Despain fan I have been a fai thful viewer of MotoWorld since its debut 10 years ago. At that time the show had an excellent opening song with gentle, upbeat trumpets - a mature, excitement-building theme not unlike "Wide World of Sports." I cringed at the change a few yea r s later when I heard the highpitched shriek which now opens the show and adds to the "wild and weird" image motorcycling has no use for. Then a few years back, when I first heard that Larry Maiers was being replaced by some "Dave Despain guy," I thought, "Oh, no, Larry does the show great." I'd read that Despain was one of the greatest, but I took on a wait-and-see attitude. Sure enough, Mr. Despain showed me the difference between a "Yeah, he's pretty good" announcer to a "serious, dedicated professional." I am 35 years old and appreciate my motorcycling news being delivered in a professional and adult-type manner. Mr. Despain shows an unmatched level of respect and knowledge of the twowheeled motorsports I participate in and follow . Perhaps Seals Communication hasn't heard of the huge push of Vetclass MX racing, or else they would understand that a la rge number of us that follow the show aren't kids who wear ugly clothes and incredibly bad haircuts. I suspect these kids get a charge out of Jerry Bernardo - as we all do - but they will eventually grow up too. Bott om line - Dave Despain is the best in the business and I suspect he will go down as th e best motorsports announcer in hist ory. Tom Hoffman Cicero,IL Thanks from #27 I feel that I am the most fortunate man on th e face of the earth - fortunate because I won my first National, finished in the serie s' top 10, and most importantly, because the good Lord has blessed me with a path that has come across the greatest people around. I'd like to say thank you to all who have helped and supported me throughout my 14-year career. Thanks first to my father, who started me racing and got me to the point where I was ready for the equipment that great tuner like Skip Eaken can build. My fiancee Missy - I can honesty say that without her things wouldn't have been nearly as enjoyable. My good friends Bill and Shelly Miller, Dale Jones, Chop's, Tom and Sharon, Becky, my brother Wade, and of course - my mother. She has supported all of my decisions and is without a doubt, the woman who molded me into the person I am today. Also, I'd like to thank Skip and Linda Eaken, who really took a chance last winter when they signed me to ride their motorcycles. You guys are awesome! And I certainly can't forget all of my sponsors! Unfortunately, space limitations in Cycle News won't allow me to list each and every ·one of you, but you know who you are, but thank you, from the bottom of my heart. And what about the fans ? Not only are you fans, you're also friends, and that's the best thing about racing! To everyone who has helped me in any way, I'd like to say thanks and give you a big pat on the back, because "I" d idn't win the DuQuoin Mile, and "I" d idn't finish 10th in points - "we" did!
