eig ht-rider field took the green fla g, Huneycutt
drove hard into tum one, takin g the lead wi th
Roper close behind. Mathews came off the line
in th ird aboard the MV Agust a 500 that was
hop ed would carry h im to the title. Ma th ews
closed on the lead du o throu gh the infield section. rolling on to the back straigh t a few bike

machines of Roper a nd Huneycutt, and Mathews put the bea utiful looki ng a nd sou n d in g

pulled away.
The stage was set for a Barber 1-2 finish, but
Rop er wa sn ' t givi ng up ye t. On lap 10 of 12,
Rope r took a tigh t, ins id e line, getting un d er
Huneycutt for second . Huneycutt came cha rging
bad< on the white-flag lap , as he drove deep into
the csses on the brakes, retaking the second spo t.
Roper tried his best to regain the positi on , coming up less than a bike length sho rt at the checkerod flag.
"The bike d id very well today, it was wCC}>in~ some oil late in the race but nothing ma jor,"

Don Murphy kicked off moto one in the lead
with Robinso n, Brian Simpson a nd john Risco

Robinson stayed glued to Murphy un til Murphy
washed out in a tu m jus t before the close of lap
one. Robinson cha rged in to the lea d with Risco
ta kin g second s po t a n d Simpson tra ili n g in
thi rd . Murph y re mo unted an d made a mad
charge after the lead ers . Simpso n dropped back
to fourth as Murphy outjumped Brian for third
p la ce. Risco pressured Rob in son until Risco

behind Robinson. Risco was all alone in the lead
until he cras hed awa y his bid for the overall by

take the moto and the overall win. Lequeriqu e

remoun ted and wen t on to take the bittersweet

Nette quic kly opened up a sma ll ad vantage over
Witmer. Grewe had sliced past both F1ickenger
and Mason earl y on, an d was testing Witmer.

. ued to hold d own the lead , but Grewe was se tting sail after Nett e.
On the third I.>p, Gre we caught Nette, passing him on the motocross track "Doubl e Doub le

and made tracks toward Lampasa s Motocross
Park, and it paid off, as Merkey won the 125cc
Beginner class.
