took tu rns in the lead, easily ze roing the firs t check, but it w as Wood who led through the firs t tigh t sec tion leadi ng to emergency-check two . Wood was able to stay comfortably on time and had to scrub off time to hit Check Two 25 seconds into his min ute . Wallace followed Wood in to record a 0:33 to take the early lead over Wood, bu t both riders were behind the perfect 0:30 of Don Knapp, the 0:31 of Eddie Diaz, and the 0:28 of Jaso n Ed le. District Champion Josh Chandler stayed in the hun t with his 0-.34, while Walden pu t himself in an early hole wit h a 0:48. Wallace continued to follow Wood thro ugh the ne xt two tests. with Woo d m issing a onepoint score a t both checks th ree and four by secon ds to share th e twos of all other con tenders e xce p t Ed ie, w ho put himself be h in d with a thr ee at Check Thr ee. In sp ite of the dust-free edge of being on the first row, Wood and Wallace were unable to use it to their ad vanta ge, as over 10 compe titors sha red a four -point score at the gas stop. . C hec k Five was easily ze roed by a ll co ntenders. and in spi te of a ~ mp h avera ge that caused riders to hu stle, Check Six also failed to extract poi nts from the front-runners. With the mileage running down, it was clear tha t the next tight sectio n would decid e the overa ll. Knowing that his narrow two-second lead ove r Wood wo uld not ho ld up at the next tiebreaker if he continued to follow, Wallace elected to ga m b le a n d rode d an g e rous ly h ot to ens ure tha t he would enjoy the du stless condi tions in front. The gambl e paid off, as there was no check preceding a lon g section of new trail prior to tie-bre aker Check Seven, where Wa llace missed a zero by one second to record a 1:00, to lead the 1:15 of Walden and the 1:24 of Wood. Sharing this score was the 1:31 of Edie, 1:22 of Diaz , 1:39 of Jon King. and the 1:42 of Knapp. Kna p p then proceeded to drop himself in the standings by burning Check Eigh t. When th e fi na l scores w e re tall ied , t h e advantage of the front row p roved to be too mu ch for the othe r compe titors to ove rcome, as the 5:33 of Wallace and 5:59 of Wood led the 5:63 of Walden. Rounding out the top five was the 6:63 of Edie and the 6:76 of King. Resul ts A SPTSMN: 1. Milnhew Wall ac£' (Yam) ; 2. O;IVid Wood (Kitw) ; 3. M.artr Wald en (Hon); 4. Jaso n Edil." (Kotw) ; 5. Canagu ier HANFORD, CA, OCT. 23 Kenny "The Ha mme r" Heess con tinued with his winning ways as he took th e overall for the third-straigh t week of the GFI North Fall Series at the Ha nford Fairgrounds . Th e se ries p oints leader, H eess nail ed th e holeshot in heat one as the 80cr Beginner class took off for the first of two grueling motos on the rough an d techni cal course. The tricky first tum p roved to be a nigh tmare for many of the Beginners. They bega n to pile up in tru e fashion while trying to negotiate the hairpin w ith two whoops right in the middle, followed by a sandy double jump. Heess made it through, however, followed by q . Tringer, Bill Nay and Joey Allan. First place bel onged to Heess, with little pressu re from behind , but second through fifth wa s another story. Tringer took a soil sample on lap two, moving Nay into second with Allan right on his heels. By the end of the lap, Allan got by Nay and started building an advantage. Nter being involved in the first-tum tangle, David Mcfarland picked himself up and proceeded to move through the pack like a madman as he worked his way from last to fourth by the end of lap four. Lap four also put an end to Nay' s charge, as he we n t down in one of the track' s many corne rs , lelling David Klingenbeck a n d Da ~ id McFar land take over the third and fourth positions. McFarland wasted no time getting around Klinge nbeck and soon was pounding on Allan's back door. A quick insid e move put him in front of Allan, but not for long as Allan retaliated with a mo ve of his own. Meanwhile, Tringer, who cras hed in lap two, had wo rked his way up to fourth by lap four and into second on lap five. Mo vi ng s tea d ily up from a bad sta r t, Ry an Phil p ot took advantage of a McFarland mistake and moved into third by the end of lap five. The moto ended with Heess taking the win, followed by Allan, Philpot, Klingenbeck and Mike Tarter rounding out the top five. Heess was take n out in the first tu m, along with se ve ra l ot hers. McFarland inherited the lead and managed to hold it for a full two laps before Heess co uld cha rge back from fifth to take ove r. McFarland hung in there, tho ugh, and - did n't let Heess out of sight in spite of some seri ous cha llenges from Tart er and Allan, who had their own battle going. By lap four, KJingenbeck mad e his entrance along with Ph ilpot, and it loo ked like World War III as the y diced an d sliced till the end of the moto. When the smo ke cleared, Philpot wa s in th ird followed by KJin. genbeck and then Tarter. Results P / W (4-6); 1. Tiearney takes Silver State MX By Betty Cord le CARSON CITY, OCT. 16 Round th ree o f the On Trac Events Northern Nevada Dealer's Challenge at Silver State Raceway was dom inated by the Michael' s Cycles /O 'Neal /FMF /Ho l le y Performa nce /Power Bar/WaR-backed Justin Tieamey. Tiea mey and Shane Esposito quickly shot o u t front off the gate, lea ving the rest of the pack. The two fron t-runners swapped the lead on lap two as Esposito passed over a large jump. Tieamey got Esposito back in the tight slu ff by the tower. The two continued to do mina te with almost a half-lap lead . Sven Stillmock was gaining gro un d on the leaders, passing Tim O'Brien on lap four. On lap six, Espos ito repassed Tiearney on the back secti on to take over the lead. Esposito would take the win with Tieamey on his tail at the finish. In moto two, Espo si to, Tieamey and Still· mock jockeyed for posi tion with Espos ito grabbing the lead . Tieamey followed suit as the yellow bikes litera lly left the field. EsflOSito held his lead, but it was eviden t that his sus pension was too stiff, kicking him forward several times. He ma naged to keep it under control wh ile Tiearney tried every line to get around him. Kenny Lash took over third position after Stillmock overshot a berm, send ing him over the bars. By the w hite-flag lap, things looked pos itive for Esposito, bu t he also misjudged a berm before the finish line and was sho t ove r the bars slidi ng six feet from his bike . Tieamey finished out the la p and took the che ckered . Esp osito remounted with sore knees' and finished in second place ahead Lash and O'Brien . Results 60: 1.
