The Ame ricans trailed b y four points until Hamill and Werner returned a 4-2 advantage in heat 12 to leave Team USA tr ail ing by just two points. , Hard racing between both teams follow ed until heat 17 when Hancock and Dukie Ermolenko stole the show with a su p erb maximum win to retake the lead , 52-50. Everything w as set for Team USA to draw level in the series, but in th e final race, Werner drifted wide and left Hamill to challenge England's leading ri der, Havelock. Try as he did, H amill just couldn't find the power or drive to catch Havelock, who crossed the line just ahead of Hamill. David Norris picked up the vital third place over Werner to bring the final score even, 54-54. 1994 AMA U.S. SUPERBIKE SERIES Round #5 of 1 - ROAD AMERICA- ELKHART LAKE, WISCONSIN 0 (#254) Tape #1 - Superbikes AMA Superbike racing really doesn't get much better than this! After the recent domination of the Superbike class by the big Ducati twins, the AMA changed the weight rules for two-cylinder machines , adding 20 pounds to their minimum weight to level the playing field for the rest of the riders on the lour-ql inder bikes. Going into the wide-open Road America course, ~ was anybody's guess howthis event could tum out. At the end of this race, a record 45,000 fans watched three different brand bikes cross the fi nish line about 1110th of a second apa rt! If that weren't enough excitement, controversy added into the story, as one of the top riders was docked a lap after the event, accused of passing under the yellow Ilag after Vence & Hines Yamaha rider Colin Edwardscrashed whileracing with the lead pack. The 600 Supersport class leatured close racing from start to finish,as Vance & Hines Yamaha veteran Jamie James put together a flawless . last lap charge to leave the second-place battle between Muzzy Kawasaki rider Steve Crevier and Kawasaki privateer Gerald Rothma n Jr. Bartels' Harley-Davidson rider Shawn Higbee and Mitchell'sModesto H-D rider Matt Waitplayed 'hogs and slammers' as they collided through the tums on the final lap lor top honors in the H-DTwin Sports race; onlyone would cross the fi nish line. The EBC Brak Unlim~ed Team Challenge featured some truly amazing speeds lor an endurance race, as the winning average speed for ' es that event was over 100 miles per hour, with top speeds posted as high as 177 mph in a battle between the MUZZY,Kawasaki ZX9 and the Erion RacingCBR900RR. He won his first race but then managed only five more points from five r ides . " Su d d e n " Sa m was missing the star t too often and getting squeezed ou t of the firs t tum. D ukie Ermo lenko was involved in the best race of th e night when he battled tooth-and-nail with Mark Loram for fo u r laps. But though it appeared that the youn g e r Ermolenk o h ad w on the con tes t by a wheel, the referee called a win for Loram. Hamill su ffered w ith bike problems early on but looked better in his last four rid es to pos t ni ne p oints for America. By th e h alfway stage of the match , England was ahead , 33-21, and there was no way back for America.
