Who cares if he's a member of the factory Harley-Davidson d irt track team . So what if he 's won 31 Grand Nationals and is the defending 100cc National Champion. Any of these thoughts could have been going through the mind of 12-yearold Toby Jorgenson, but after a racelong battle with Chris Carr - in which he -emerged victorious - all the youngster could say was, "It was sure neat to race with Chris Carr." What race was this, you ask? The 3rd Annual 10Dec National, co-promoted by Engines Only and the Lodi Motorcycle Oub. What track? None other than the Lodi Motorcycle Bowl, the Nor thern' Californi a venue that Carr cut his teeth on in the early stages of his career. The bikes? Highly modified Honda XR100 mini bikes . A typical race machine entered in this fun event is bored out to a ma ximum of 150cc, has a hot cam, a trick pipe and modified suspension. Big boys with trick toys, to say the least. Joining Jorgenson and Carr in the Expert class were former 25Dec World Champion John Kocinski, newly crowned 250Cc National Champion Rich Oliver and Mr. XRlOO himself, Engines Only President Frank Nye. Nearly 200 entrants showed up for this year's event, an d classes for racers of all si zes, age and ability were fea tured -.The proceeds from the race we re d on ated to the Ride for Kids Foundation, .whi ch raises m oney for the fig ht against ped iatric brain tumors . The first five-lap heat race saw Nye gra b the ho lesho t abo ard his self-tuned N machine. Nye was followed by Shawn Raggio, Nathan Wait and Carr. Wait lost his front end in the right-hander and hit the dirt, nearly taking Carr with him. Carr was momentarily relegated to fifth, . but the n umber-one-plate bearer wa s quickly back up into second by the third lap . Carr set his sights on Nye and made the pass for the lead on the last lap as they negotiated the jump. All Nye could do was wave as Carr zip ped by and on to victory. Reggio held on for th ird , while Tony DeHerrera and Rob Damron rounded ou t the top five direct transfer positions. Jorgenson gave the fans a preview of things to come in the second heat.
