a wire-to-wire victory over Kocinski, who was mounted aboard N ye's spare bike. Kocinski looked like a veteran dirt tracker as he flicked his 100 into the corners, but he was still no match for Jorgenson. Team Undo's Brett Land es was a close third, while O liver fin ished a r espectable fourth . Jo hn Hlebo III nabbed the last transfer. In the third hea t, Former Grand Na ti onal competitor Rod Spence r showed that although he currently races sprint cars, he still knows how to slid e a bike. Spencer raced to a runaway w in over Paul Iwanaga, Dominic DeMario, Jack Jenson and Gary Rogers. Two semifinals helped round out the field for the 18-rider main event. Former Grand National Dirt Track Manager Jerry Kennedy was on hand, serving as the starter. When the green light flashed at the start of the 25-lap National, Jorgenson jumped into the lead and immediately tried to p ut distance on Carr. Th ings looked set for a great rematch, as Carr was the winner of last year's event, while Jorgenso n finished second. By the second lap, the duo had already pulled well clear of the rest of the field. Kocinski, meanwhile, found himself on the ground after falling off his bike in the early going. Too bad, as he had been running near the front of the pack. By the fifth lap , Jorgenson still held onto a good lead but Carr, who was fast through the infield, looked as though he would mount a challenge. But each time Carr got close to Jorgenson, the youngster would drive even harder off the corners and pull away. Behind the lead pair, Spencer was holding down a solid third, though he was being left further and further behind by the leaders. Landes motored into fourth, overtaking Nye, who was foiled by Kocinski, who was a lap down. "John pulled out on the track right in fron t of me," said Nye, with a laugh. "I almost threw it down, but I managed to save it. Then I got a flat rear tire near the end of the race." Oliver sa t sixth, and for a moment see m ed to ch a llen ge N ye . Oliver's charge wa s cut short, however, as he lost his front end and cra shed back to 10th while trying to pass Nye. Th e runningorder r ema ined the sa me until the 15th lap. At that time, Carr reel ed in Jorge nson and the two began to swap frame pa int in the tight hairpin tum. Lapped traf fic proved to be Carr's d emise, as Jorgenson seemed to weave through the backmarkers with relative ease, while Carr was momentarily hung up. By lap 23, Jorgenson and Carr had lap ped all but Spencer an d Landes. Carr di d all he could in the remaining laps, bu t when the checkered flag ca-ne out, it was Jo r g enson w ho rem ained the leader. Carr was second, while Spencer nabbed the third and final pod iu m pos ition. a Lodl Cycle Bowl Lodl, California Results: October 23 EX: 1. Toby Jorgenson (Ho n); 2. Chris Carr (Hon); 3.
