Miller aces Spring Valley MX By J ohn Ma;ICson CLYDE, TX, OCT.2 Skip Miller reaped the benefits of tra ining and racing in the off-season by sweeping the Ama teur class for the overall win at round one of the Texas Vintage Racing Club fall series, wh ich wa s run on the historic Spring Valley track orig inally laid out in 1973. Jerry Nelson, new to the Amateu r class, tried valiantly to stay with Miller, bu t was unabl e to match Miller's pace in the d eep sand . Ron King and Charlie Adams were battling for third in the second moto, on ly to hav e Chris Smetak sneak by both for the show posi tion . Home town favorite Scott Wegn er used his blinding speed and jump ing skills to post a 1-1 da y in the Intermediate class . Rand y Brown was able to match Wagn er 's speed but w as un able to mast er the tra ck's first double jump in tim e to catch him. Joh n Dosko cil brought his Bullaco home in the third slot. John Poor puton a d ispla y of impressive air time to the deligh t of the spectators while swee p ing the mas ter class. Having flown to Oklaho ma to prepare for the Interna tional Six Day Enduro, the Baja 500 winner made the cross country trip b ac k to co n tes t th e Checkpoint M.e.'s Bad Mountain Enduro, then caug ht yet another fligh t back to Tulsa just one day before the start of the ISDE. "1 was going right up, a nd ano the r guy lost h is balance and fell over on me," said Lewis, who was riding on minute 42. "I had to turn around and go back down." The move cost Lewis in the fonn of a three at the next check . Rid ing on minute four, Krause tu rned in a one, and that ma de the difference in the final sco res. Or did it? Lewis felt that he was only tw o min utes late to the check, and as this story went to p ress, the results were under p rotest. 11 Lew is is right, he and Krause would be tied on min utes, and Lewis w ould come out ahead on tiebreake rs.
