sausage and ho t d ogs . Throw in com, beans and
various sa lads and you had qui te a spread .
Terry Clanlon handled th e emcee duties, and
the awards ceremo ny started off by recogniz ing
the r ider w it h th e high est points sco re, th e
awa rd going to Charlie Vene gas. It was a specia l
moment for Vene gas, as his m other and gi rlfrien d were present.
A special awa rd was presented to 1987 U.S.
National Champion Brad Oxley for 20 years of
racing. As is traditional, the p laque had 20 silver
dollars on it. Ha rry O xley jokingly told his son
that the year had not been that good, so all he
could afford was to give Brad 20 pennies on a
small plaque. Brad took it with a smi le and wa s
rea lly surprised when the real plaque, quite a bit
larger, wa s give n to him later. Hi s father d id
make him promise not 10 pry the silver dollars
off.

Improved in Division One, while Paul Colston
claimed the Divison Two title. Paul said it was
th e SOO lap s at Ken Maely's Ranch in Corona,
California, that helped his riding.
Bobby Schwa rtz wa s recognized for being
the Most Dedicated in Division One, with Mike
Reed accepting the Division Two honor.
Brian Pappalardo was voted Best Sportsman
in Divison One. He claimed it was becau se he
got beaten the most and d idn't co mp lai n . Bill
Green was the winner in Division Two. The
jerry King Perpetual trophy went to Randy
' Skinn er, who was also the Division Two rid er
wh o had the highest points lotal for the season.
Warren "Gran d pa" Russell also presented and
accepted the Perpetual Number-One Rider to
·Sud den" Sam Ermolenko, who could not
attend the barbecu e because he was alread y on a
plane headed for England and anot he r speedway race.
A lot o f spe ed w ay ' s m over s a n d sha ke rs
were recognized at this year 's even t. Warren and
Evie Russell were honored for all their support
as were Jean and Dennis Fink, who printed their
first racin g program for Costa Mesa in 1969.
Gary an d Sandy Hicks Sr. were also recognized
for th eir achi eveme n ts "in the sp ort. Tom and
Marilyn Ci rello, who provided ma gne tos for
multi -tim e World Cha mp ion Ivan Mauger, and
ha ve been hooked ever since, were also recognized. Ot her specia l awards went 10 jerry King,
th e sta rte r at Cost a Mesa since th e beginn ing,
Howie "Mr. Raz Video" Zechn er for all his great
footage , and Harry Oxley and jack Milne for 25
years of promoting great racing at Costa ML'Sa.

Eastern Motopark Motocross

Eighteen fath er and son teams tu rned out for the
inaugural team race on a bright and sunny central Oh io day at Eastern Motopa rk,
Th is uniqu e motocross eve n t was hel d in
conj u nct ion w ith the regula r day' s racin g at
Eastern Motopark, and the new class was definitely a h it. Only one moto was held, with the
ru les being that the fathers would start without
b ikes be h ind the starting line. O nce the gate
dropped, they would run out, start the bike and
rid e the firs t lap. After com ple tion of the first
lap , th e fa the rs wo u ld ha nd the bike to th eir
sons for th e second lap, a nd th en the fathe rs
wou ld take the fina l lap .

were running third and fourth, but the race was

handed the bike over to son jeff Gibson after the
initial la p. jeff Gibso n fle w his Tea m Gre en backed KX around the technical. dusty track ,
and ha nded his Dad the bike bac k for the final
lap with plenty of brea thing room for the out -ofbreath Dan.
In the big-bike class it wa s Chris Berry and
adopted fath er Gerry Bernett cruising to the win
after pre- race favor ite Tomy Collier and his dad
suffered from premature ar m pu mp. In the 30+
class th ere was a grea t race between lon gtim e
riv al s Richard Robinson and Tim Peck, wi th
Robinso n taking the overall th rou gh 2-1 finishes.
