Maxwell, Myerscough endure .at Glen Helen Six-Hour By Lori Yarnell SAN BERNARDINO, CA, SEPT. 18 The first-ever Six Hours of Glen Helen off-road en d u ra nce b rough t in more than 50 tea ms to cha llenge the gr ue ling co urse of Gle n He len OHV Pa rk , b ut in th e e n d, the tea m of Bob · Maxwell and Brian Myerscou gh took the win. The team of Chris Ridgeway and Tim Morton led the firs t lap, wi th the Haulmaste r/MSR / G .L. Willia ms /R&D Raci n g-backed tea m of Myercsoug h and Maxwell tra iling. Bu t it did n 't tak e Myers cough long to wo rk his wa y to the front. Ridgeway tried to stay with Myerscoug h, b ut when it wa s tim e to change rid ers, Myer scough had passed every rider on the track and put everyo ne one lap d own, excep t for Ridgeway. Ma xw ell too k control of the lead bike an d ro de a very h a rd pace, sho wing his abil ity to end ure the lapped riders and d usty riding conditio n s . By th e fi rs t wa te r b r ea k , t he Max well / Myerscoug h team had a la rge lead over the team of Ridgeway and Mort on. Dup ree managed to w in both his SODcc heat and main eve nts but had to ea t some dust from Johnny Fuerst in the' first go--arou nd . Fuerst was first off the line and exited tu m two in cha rge, the n held th e po sition fo r th ree la ps. O nce Dupree found the inside line on Fuers t, howev· er, it was all over. In the main event, Dup ree was fastest off the line both times. c.R. Phillips lost con trol before one la p ended, an d a res ta rt gave Dupree yet ano ther cha nce to demonstrate his quick sta rts. Onc e racing go t underway it was Dup ree all the way. Off-road star Rob Nolin traded in his bu ggy for a 250cc Yam ah a for the evening an d was q u ick off the line in the 250 heat, bu t he went wid e eno ugh exiting tu rn tw o to allow Holt to s li p by . Chester, Rand top MUddy Creek/MSRday Motocro3s By Sam Gammon BWUNTVIllE,TN, OCT.2 Jim Ches ter and Greg Rand earned top honors d u rin g round 14 of the Mega Series a t Muddy Creek Raceway, which hosted over 390 ride rs for MSR Day. Ch est er let everyone kno w right off the bat tha t he had big plans for the day as he holeshot the first 125cc Pro moto a nd leti all the way to the chec kered flag . He'd jus t ma de the switch from Yamaha to Suzuki for the '95 season an d appear ed to adapt to the new bikes very quickly. Rand and Kri s Swaney led C h es ter a nd Richard Prather off the sta rt in the second moto. Bu t on the secon d lap, Ch ester m o ved b y Sw an ey, w ho took a fall, and Loug h charged into third . On the fifth lap, Rand started to fade, and Chester too k advan tage of the situation by pa ssing for th e lead a nd cr uising to th e win. Lou gh captured second on the last lap, dropping Rand to third for the moto. Lou gh put a ha lt to Chester's plans for total domination by lead ing the 25lkc Pro class off the gate in the first rnoto, but Hank Moree showed Lough a move as he. cut a tight inside line and too k the lead on lap two. Chester worked his way to th ird . Mor ee bob bled on la p five,and bo th Lough an d Ch ester were by. Lough collected the w in over C hes ter a nd Rand , w ho had wo rked his way to th ird . Loug h seemed to have the second moto covered also, but he go t Sideways on the ap proach to the finish- line jump and crashed out of the race. His crash left Rand in the dri ver's seat with C h ester pushin g fo r the lead , but Ches te r dropped his bike on the tu m beside the start and finished up in fourth for the moto. Run MX, for the first of what many hope will be an annual NESC even t. Seco nds after th e ga te d ropped on Sa turday' s first 125ee Expert moto Dow d mus t have wondered if rid ing with his old NESC bu ddies a t one of his favori te New England tracks was really worth racing in the relentless rain. Before the first tum, the Natio nal number 16 had been pee led off his Yamaha nea r the front of the pack and tossed into the dri nk. After getting bounced a roun d in the mud, he resta rted , from last, abso lu tely on fire . With in th e first h alf o f th e 20-min u te-p lu s-t w o-Iap mota, Dowd had passed over 20 riders to move into fifth behin d Jason Boron . While th e ba tt le up fron t betw een Mik e Trea dwell an d Bill Dziel a k g ot dicey, Dowd reeled them in. With four laps remaining, Dowd relentles s ly h unt ed d ow n Tr eadwell, th en Dzielak, passing the lead er on the infield jum p. His lead lasted only two quick tu rns before he slid into the retaining tires, allowi ng Dzielak to slip past. Dowd b lasted onto the track in front of Tread well to maintain second. Dzielak 's Honda then began ove rhea ting and misfired ominously. Dowd thr ottled past to take the check ered flag with a bike length to spare. Dowd sta rted seven th in mota two, while NESC points lead er Scott Carter grabbed th e holesh ot. Trea d well w as soon running seco nd , an d he reeled in Carter, trying to pass wide. HOOKSTOWN, PA, SEPT. 18 Beaver Valley Raceway was the site of the second round of the Distri ct 5 Penns ylvania / West Virgi nia State Championship Series. The lure of the con tin ge ncy m on e y o ffe re d b y H onda, Kawasaki, Suzuki and Yamah a brou ght ma ny ou t-of·state rid e rs into the ser ies providing a rid er turnout of over 300 rid ers and som e very exciting racing. Qualifie rs and co nsolatio n races had to be run in the 125cc C an d 250cc C classes w ith Kawasa ki-mounte d John Clend e n in w inning ,-,verall in both classes. The third moto of the day wa s the 2SOcc A class which turned in to a dog figh t betw een the Lin ema n Cyde Yama ha of Shane Slot h er a n d C u mb erland Ka w as a k ibacked Jeff Yen tzer. These tw o riders set a pace that the tw o young up start " A" rider s of Josh Sweat and J.D. Collins just couldn't match. The second 2SOcc A moto saw Siother and Yentzer up front aga in, th is time in front of Greg Krinebrook with Siother taking the overall. In the 125cc A class action it was all Slother in the first moto but a flat tire held him to a secon~ -moto fourt h place. Eno ugh for second overall for the da y, Yentzer had some problems in both 125cc A mo tos sa yin g that the comb ined start with the Vet A riders made it har d to cut thr ou gh the Vet riders, who we re all on 2505. Young Gene Stu ll extended his win streak in the series to eight in a ro w taking his Action Kawasa ki/Suz uki sponsored -KX60 to the ove r- By Steve Kelley John Dowd (right) returned to his ol d stomping grounds, surv ived the heavy mud and dominated th e SlIvercup MX at Bull Run. Tread well grabbed a big handful of thr ottle to pass Ca rter for the lead on the outside, but Dowd w as n ow on h is rea r tire. Do wd and Treadwell battl ed up front, Dowd ma king his moves in the comers, w ith Treadwell closing the d oor. Dowd finall y got ar ound Treadwell and opened a big lead. With two lap s remaining, Treadwell began to catch Dowd, who struggled with his gog gles and finally took them off when Tread well had closed the ga p to 100 yar ds. With only one lap remaining, Dowd an d Treadwell en tered th e drop-off separated by less than 10 bike lengths. But Dowd retained th e lead and rod e un challenged the final lap .
