NHRA Winston Drag Racing Series: Round 9
Schultz clinches
championship at
Keystone Nationals
By Todd Veney
READING, PA,SEPT. 16-18
ven if he sleeps through the last two
r aces of th e yea r - Topeka a n d
Pomo na - Dave Schultz will still win
the 1994 NHRA Championship .
His third Winston points title in four
years was officially clinched at the Pioneer Electro nics Keystone Nationals in
Reading, Pennsylvania, where he won,
and did just about every thing but make
the first Pro Stock run un der seven an d
a half seconds .
" Yo u co u ld see tha t the wea th e r
wasn't going to be there this weekend
for a run in the 7.40s," Sch u lt z sa id .
"And tha t p ro ba bly worked in m y
favor, because I was able to concen trate
on winning and not on going all-ou t to
put up a number like tha t."
All Schultz d id was run 7.532 - the
best Pro Stock run of all time, backed up
within the on e percent requ ired for an
NHRA national record by his 7.55 in a
final-roun d victory against John Myers .
Sch ultz's Son oco-sp on sor ed Suzuki
q u a li fi ed number one w ith a
7.59/176.02, and in elimin a tions sent
hom e Ton y Girardi, Paul Ga st , Jim
Bern ard and Mye rs with th e quickes t
string of times in history: 7.53/ 177.20
(national record e.t, and top speed of the
ev ent), 7.56 /173.57, 7.54/173.91, and
7.55/173.04.
Myers, the onl y rider to beat him all
year on ei the r the NHRA and PreStar
tours, was lef t a t the lin e in the final
round by Schultz, .428 to .471, and sh ut
d o w n lon g before h igh g ear, w hile
Sch ultz disappeared into the distance
w ith the 7.55/173.04, his fourth of four
grea t eliminations runs, all qu icker than
any one else has ever gone.
To win the Sears Craftsman Nationals at Topeka or the Winston Finals a t
Pom o na, maybe Sch ultz ca n remind
himself tha t every win pa ds the record
for all-time vic tories he recen tly too k
from Te rry Vance. Claw ing for every
possible point toward this year's championship may no longer be a meaningful
goal now that the title is already his.
