Gibson, Girard again at Grattan Road Race By Jac ki Fisher 40 BElDING, Ml, AUG. 27·28 West Michigan Sport Bike Oub's Greg Gibson had many misha ps, enabling many to sha re the spo tligh t for the first tim e this year at Grattan Racewa y Park. Th e b iggest brea k w ent to Don & Roy 's backed Tom Girard in Saturday's Expert GTO 25-lap race. As usual, Gibson establ ished a substantial lead early in the race, until the last few laps when his rear tire began to lose air. Gibson suspected it was going. but prayed for the white flag in the hope that he could maintain his lead . On the strai gh ta way, 500 feet from the checkered flag, Girard passed the struggling Gibson to steal the win . Done in by a nail in his bra nd new tire, Gibso n hung on for second place. Gr eg Hutcheson's race-long th ird position was briefly threate ned b y the TZ-mo unted Yamaha of Aint 's Donn Lewis near the end of the race. Hutcheson prev ailed with Lewis takin g fourth and Derek Stru ye finishin g fifth. Girard also got the second big break for lhe weekend on Sunday during the $1000 Unlim ited GP. Gibso n, who was havin g tire problems the entire wee kend, took ins tan t comman d on the first lap, only to lose both ends coming on to the straightaway and ended up in the gra ss after a battle to save a severe tank slappe r. Girard made his way past leader Valley Racing's Brian Conely by the third lap and tried to stretch it out and distance himseJf from the pack. Todd Harrington overcame a fifth-row-grid handicap, sliced hi s way past th ree to four rid ers p er lap to mount an aggressive attack on Girard for first place but had to battle with Shawn Scholten and a detennined Brian Conel y in the latter stages of the race. Girard hun g on for the win with Harrington. Scholten, Conely and Wisconsin native Pat Lamb finishing second through fifth, respectively . Results EX SOLO GTO: 1. Tom Girard. (Hon); 2. SEPT.4 Race-Tech/Carmichael Honda/Yoko-sponsored Dave Coupe thrilled the fans - and stunned his competition - when he lapped the entire field en route to victory in the Vetera n " A'" class in the first motocross promoted by Danny "Magee" Chandler at Marysville's E Street MX track. Co upe admittedly had a bit of a " ho mefiel d'" advantage on the track, since he lives across the river in nearby Yuba City; bu t fitness , no t familiarity, was the key to Coupe's domination of the 4O-min ute-Iong first mota. The racers faced several surprises on the Magoo d esi gn ed course, incl udi ng a un ique start sectio n, wherein the racers dropped into a larg e "(;.out " only thi rty yards off of the star! gate . When the ga te dropped , Coupe leaped into the cavity side by side with the oth er vets, but that wa s as close as anyone got to Coupe for the res t of the race, as Cou pe launched his CR250 out of the dip w ith sufficient mom entum to suddenly be leadi ng by seve ral bike lengths. Behind Coupe, Kawasa ki's Mike Harper and Suzukimounted Mike Johnson tried to stay close to the hom et own favorite, but Cou pe's un iqu e lines were so fast that the others could only watch as he pu lled away. Th e unusu ally lon g a nd varied tr ack fea tured only "natural" obstacles, and had rough, high-speed sections that suited Coupe's smooth, fluid style. Soon, Coupe began 10 lap the backmarkers in the good-sized Vet field. One by one, each rider wa s passed by Coupe, with some being lapped three times during the course of the moto. With five minutes remaining. Coupe's pit board told him that only second -place Huper had not been lapped, and Harper was onl y yards ah ead as the powerful machines echoed underneath the E Street bridge. As fans cheered hi m on all around, Coupe made the pass on Harper, who was powerless to stop Coupe. At the checkered flag. the 33-yearold Co upe appeared fresh despite going full bore for 40 minutes on the pounding track, and he crossed th e line to win the mo to b y an impressive margin of victory. The second molo also belo ng ed to Coupe, but it wasn't quite the rout the first moto was, as Harper and Johnson stay ed closer to Coupe in the shorter (30-minute) sec o n d moto. Still, Coupe led fro m start to fin is h, and wa s the han ds--clown winn er. . " I've loved this track ever since I was a kid." said Coupe after his win. "This was classic, tra· ditional motocross, and I'd like to thank Magoo for putting on an excellent race." Results SOB: 1. Brett Racine (Kaw); 2. And y Gregg (JCaw). soC: I .}. J. Cummings (Suz ); 2.
