cu s hion o f on ly 32 p oin ts a t Roebling Roa d
Raceway.
Hous ley and Morris each rode as many races
as class lq;al in the battle for the overall number -one plat e. nus is the first time in CCS history that the number-one plate has been held by
the sa me racer for two seaso ns running.
Perfect weather made for excellent racing as
Coastal Georgia 's usual ne ar -lOo-degree
temperatures were replaced with a high of 72.
Lo w temperatures made for happy tires and
motors, and seemed to aid in concentration, as
crashes were at an aU-time low .
Saturday's Solo races were cakewalks for the
win ners. Jamie Bowman retired early, handing
the GTO win to Bill aarly. Second -place finisher and racing grandfather Frank Kinsey clinched
the Regional Championship. Brian Gibbs had a
~g-to-na~ rom~ in GTU, but his effort placed
~I~ third m regIOnal points with seco nd-place
fim sher Michael C repea u taking the championship.
Amateur fast guy Todd Brank won both Solo
c1
a;;ses and wrapped up two cha mp ions hips in
domg
Brank, who has been virtually unbeatable this yea r, also took wins in Middleweight
Supers port, H ea v yw eight Su p e rs po r t and
Superbik e. Hi s effo rts in the '94 season ha ve

Regi onal Championshi ps and placed him at the
top of 373 Southeast region Amateurs by a margin of 734 po ints .
The final round of qualifying for the Ho nda
CBR Challen ge mad e for grea t racing. In th e
Unli m ited Supersport class, Dann y Roberts outlasted Gene Church for the win and $500 in top
contingency. Robe rts pulled off a classic draft
pass at the finis h to bea t Church.
To p gu ns fro m Flo rida, Dav id Est ok and
Jamie Bowman, swapped the lead in the Mid dleweight Supersport CBR600 Challenge. At the
Wh.lte- flag lap Bowma n mad e his move, drag
racmg Estok down the long front straight only to
be edged out by at the line by no more than the
th ickness of his fron t tire. Fifth-place finisher
Brian Gibbs too k the Rq;ional Champions hip.
GIbbs, who has been rid ing hurt since July, went
on to win Middlewe ight GP in a classi c ba tt le

COSTA MFSA. CA. SEPT. 2
~harlie Venegas ma y be peaking at the right
time .
With the 1994 U.S. National les s tha n on e
mo nth awa y, Veneg as appears to have found a
comfortab le rhythm on the tiny bullring at the
Orange County Fairgrounds, if his do uble main
event victory during the Mission Yamaha -sponsored Fox Night is an y ind ication.
Vene gas d om inated the Scratch side of the
program, tran sferr~n g smoo th ly to the ma in

On the other side of the program, forme r British
Na tiona l league rid er, Dou g Nicol, stepped up
on a cushioned Costa Mesa track tha t sui ted his

in the other Scra tch semi to transfer and force
none other than two-time US. National Champion " Flyin '" Mike Faria to ride the Scratch Last
Ch ance race for his ma in~ent berth.
Nico l's fireworks weren"t yet over when the
Scratch main event was s taged , as he bolted
from his po le startin g pos ition to lead Venega s,
Faria, Gary Hicks and Don Odom into tum one.
Nicol rod e an ins ide-outside, Bobby Schwartz style line in an attemp t to run aw ay fro m the
fiel d, but Venegas eme rged from the pack to
chal lenge Nicol jus t past the halfway po int and
slowly reel him in on the sho rter, blue-grooved
line. _
With one lap to go, the Rock N' Java /D&F
Engineerin g / Sh oei /Troy Lee Des igns /NJK/
Anna-backed Venq;a. slid his Jawa under Nicol
in tum one to take the lead. Nicol made one
lasl-ditch attempt a t retaking the point by heading ou t to the deep dirt and finding a good
drive off the last tum, but Venegas was not to
be head ed . Faria wound up third ove r Hic ks
and Odom.
In the Handicap main, Venq;as rocketed off
his po st on th e 4D-yard line w ith Brad Ox ley,
and the two riders pic ked off traffic until they
were running 1-2. Venegas wen t to take the win
