What up with Henry?
I would like to know if Doug Henry
is still eligible to race in the 125cc
class next yea r now that he has two
125ee National MX Championships?
Lisa Neville
Beverl y, MA
Yes . The AMA no longer makes it
mandatory for a 125cc rider to move up
to the 250cc class after winning his second 125cc title. DougHenry will remain
on the 1-800-COLLECT/Honda team for
the 1995 season, but Honda hasn't committed as to what class - 125 or 250 - he
will compete in next year...Editor.
Hold on to your hats
Ha ts o ff to Cy cle News and Donn
Maeda for the superb coverage of the
Trial des Nations. Thanks to you, our
fine young U.S. riders have gained
r ecognition for their efforts and
appreciation of their skills.
Cycle News has blazed the trail
this year with its unprecedented coverage of U.S. and World Championship Trials. The entire U.S. trials
community is very grateful.
We have a great young crop of U.S.
riders coming up which I believe
have the potential to challenge the
Euros in years to come. With the sup- .
port of industry leaders such as Cycle
News, AXO, Shoei, Protect-All,
Xtreme, Game, Galfer and PowerBar,
our riders will not have to struggle in
anonymity.

What ha ppened to the fans getting to
pick the Mo tocross des Nations team?
After reading the AMA's picks for the
'95 tea m, it di dn't take a scientist to
. figure out that they were in for a
tough time. Why Jeff Emig? Doug
Henry is a two-time and defending
125cc National Champion. Emig was
ranked fifth in '94 - why pick him?
Then there's Mike Kiedrowski. He
hasn' t raced since mid-July, and only
ha d one race under his belt before the
MXdN. He was not a good ch oice.
How about Jeremy McGrath or my
favori te, John Dowd? He 's currently
one of the hungriest. The only right
choice was, of course, Mike Lakocco,
the 500cc National Champion. So
don't blame the team for finishing
second, blame the decision makers at
the AMA.Please, next year, let 's send
the fastest riders so we can start our
new win streak.

Gurney no champion
The commen t con cernin g Da n Gurney (Briefly, Issue #37, Sep tember 21)
is a bit ·off. First of all, Dan has never
been Formula One World Champion.
Phil Hill is the only American to have
won the title and he did it in 1961 in a
Ferrari. Secondly, Dan did win an F-l
race in a car of his own manufacturer,
a V-12 Eagle at Spa in 1967.
Stick to motorcycles. I may know
little about Grand Prix "rice burners,"
but I do know a great deal about
these older race cars and their drivers
- including Dan Gurney.
Michael G reen

In addition to Phil Hill, Mario Andreiti
is another American who won theFonnu-
la One World Championship. Andretti
did so in 1978 while driving a Lotus.
Apparently, Mr . Andretti isn' t old
enough for you to know a "great deal"
about...Editor.
Remembering Nick
There were a gro up of five or six of us
at or near the front of the pack in the
195 2 Rams Run National Championships Hare 'n Ho und. They included John Mclaughlin' (who u ltima tely
won the even t overall), AI Rogers, Del
Ku h n, Bu d Ekins, Butsy Mueller,
Nick Nicholson, some others...and
me. I had overshot a left turn down a
sa ndwash and ended up on a bluff
that allowed me to see where the
course had veered. Before thinking, I
put my Cooper-Larnoreaux-sponsored Matchless single in gear and
charged ahead, and that led to an
almost straight-down fall of about 18
feet and a crash that put a huge dent
in the front of my b ike. It belched
some sprockets in the process. I was
almost certainly finished for that day.
Just then, Nick overshot the same
turn and ended up on the same bluff.
He saw me at the bottom on my backside and negotiated his way down to
where I had crashed. He calmly
leaned h is BSA against the hillside,
brought over some tools and bailing
wire, and, with minor assistance from
me, with a big rock proceeded to
methodically beat my front wheel
into a b ump y b u t generally round
shape. Then he wired the spokes that
we re loose a nd tigh tened o thers,
trued the wheel as best he could and
tightened the fr on t axl e. Whil e I
repea tedly reminded him that he was
not far out of the lead and was losing
precious time, he simply smiled and
finished the work, picked up his bike
and was off after the leader. I'm not at
all sure I cou ld h a v e show n such
regard for a fellow rider in the same
situation.
As I recall, N ick ended u p fifth
overall. Thanks to Nick, I was actually able to finish the race and win the
amateur class title and place seventh
overall. It was an important class win
for me'and my last as an amateur in
AMA District 37. I have a lways
remembered that gesture on Nick's
part and always thought of him as a
good friend and mentor. He was certainly a gifted all-around rider and an
ambassador of goodwill for motorcycling wherever he went. I will always
remember Nick and he will be missed
by those who knew him well.
