Michael Barnes was an interested specta tor at th e Road Atlanta National, though a broken left scaphoid kept him from racing. Barnes broke the wrist on the first of a two-day test at the Most circuit in Czechoslovakia. He was testing the Energizer Elf Yamaha 125cc GP bike with hopes of riding it in some GPs this season. "The rear end wasn't planted when I went into a tum. I was getting used to the Yamaha," said Barnes, who has ridden Honda 125s. "And it bit me." The wrist, which was casted, may require surgery and, if so, would be race ready in three weeks. He's hoping to race in the final two races of the Ducados Open Series in Spain and may make another German Superbike National. "The team is real patient. They're not the least bit discouraged," Barnes said. He added that he thought he would make his annual trip to the Macau GP in December. Having been a part of the winning team in a number of the Middleweight Team Challenge races, Barnes joined the championship-winning Moto Liberty/Honda on the victory podium. Participants in the October 2 California Trail Rides 5th Annual Cycle News Dual Sport Jamboree in Big Bear, California, will be treated to special dual sport seminars on October 1. Seminars wil be given by California Trail Rides, Fineline Suspension, KIM, Baja Designs and Thor Racewear. Changes, changes, changes: ESPN has again changed the broadcast dates for the AMA Grand National Champi onship Series races. The peoria IT will be shown on October 5 at 2:00 p.m.; the Goshen Hall Mile will air on October 21 t 1:00 a.m.; the Springfield Mile is scheduled to be shown on October 26 at 1:00 a.m.; and the Sacramento Mile, which is set to ru n this weekend, will air on November 2 at 1:00 a.m. Bel-Ray Lubricants recently donated over $6000 worth of lubricants to the Motorcycle Mechanics Institute, located in Phoenix, Arizona. "MMI has a lo-year relationship with Bel-Ray, and this latest donation will help us further our goal of providing the finest in motorcycle technical training," said Larry Barrington, MMI's Director of Education. Downing wins second Junior S eedwa title alifornian Steven Downing joined some pretty elite company when he became only the fourth rider in history to win back-to-beck U.S. Junior National Speedway Championships when he accomplished the feat at Gene Woods' Speedway USA in Victorville, California. The 15-year-old Downing scored 14 points and then defeated Ryan Fisher, who also scored 14 points, in a run-off to retain the title. Jim Fishback Jr. was third with 13 points. ' "I was pretty confident," Downing said. "My last race was pretty hairy. I was with McDonald and Fisher, and we all tangled and hit the wall. I got a bruised jaw, but that's about it." With the victory, Downing joins Ronnie Correy, Josh Larsen and Brent Werner - rid ers who have gone on to represent Team USA in international speedway competition. Downing has aspirations to do the same. "I want to move up to the professional level," Downing said. "I want to get up to First Division as soon as possible and then maybe go overseas." C Fastrack Riders will conduct open practice and school sessions at Willow Springs Raceway in Rosamond, California, November 18 and December 16. Minimum bike prep is required, and no safety wire is needed. Lap times will be available for a small fee. Keith Code's California Superbike School will handle the rider improvement classes. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, there were 2444 motorcyclist fatalities in 1993, indicating a 2.1% increase from the '92 figure of 2394. The slight increase follows two years - '91 and '92 - in which there were major decreases of 13.5% and 14.7%, respectively. MCM Motorcycles will show their MCM 948 V-2 to the press at the Cologne Motorcycle Show on Tuesday, October 4. The off-road four-stroke MCM uses a Folan powerplant. Only three rounds remain in the World Championship Superbike Series. The . next round will run on September 25th in Mugello, Italy, before heading to Donington Park in England on October 2. The series concludes in Australia on October 30 at Phillip Island. In addition to the regular entries, recently crowned AMA U.S. Superbike National Champion Troy Corser will compete in all three of the final rounds on a Fast By Ferraro Ducati. The memorial service for Nick Nicholson will be held on Saturday, October 8 at the Elks Lodge, at 6708 Wofford Blvd, in Wofford Heights, California. Nicholson was a Greeves distributor, James distributor, Daytona 100 winner, and offroad racer.
