But after Schultz scored his sixth and third straigh t - victory at Indianapolis Raceway Pa rk , he joined an elite

racin g ha ve won more times a t the
sport's most prestigious event, Bob
Glidden (nine wins), "Big Daddy" Don
Garlits (eight) and Don "the Sn ak e"
Prudhomme (seven). Schul tz's victory
moved him into the company of what
are arguably the three grea test drag racers of all time.
Fo r Schultz, the NHRA Winston
points championship is practically a
foregone conclusion . Nonetheless, the
Sunoco-backed rider was finally proven
to be h uman aft er all, whe n for th e

"We were thi nking after th e race
(that) we should n't look like this,"
Schultz said. "We knew we had all day

where we felt we should have been ."
Schultz's first-round qua lifying time,
a shocking 7.551/ 172.91, was the second
fastest in NHRA history, and it quickly

Schultz w altze d through Mond ay's
eliminations, ultimately meeting Myers'
Star Racing tea mma te and 1991 U.S.

wi th a 7.62 / 171.72 over Berna rd ' s
7.71/ 167.34. In doing so, Schultz has now
