Results Cellular One Sound of Thunder Series: Round 5. Kalos king at Albany Motocross By Mike Young Sr. ALBANY, OR, AUG. 7 haun Kalos brought his Husaberg to Albany Supercross to do battle in the Sound of Thunder Series, and when the day was done, he had notched another victory in the Pro class and dashed the hopes of several local riders , as well. Led by former AMA National 500cc Champion Chuc k Sun, Gary Beyer - an excellent local Pacific Northwest pro fr om Albany - and Salem's Kenny Olsen, hopes were very high that the Pacific Northwest riders could upset the series regulars. Unfortunately for the folks from the Northwest, their hopes of victory wer e very short-lived. At the drop of the gate for moto one, Gary Beyer snatched the holeshot from fellow Northwesterner Grayson Hart, but Kalos assumed the lead by the third tum with both Mike Young and Greg Zitterkopf moving into second and third, respectively. Zitterkopf moved by Young on the fourth lap as Zitterkopf's KTM was just too quick for Young's heavy ATK. Zitterkopf moved up on Kalos, aggressively challenging him for the lead. For five more laps the battle for first raged on, with Young a few bike lengths back, in third. The three front-runners were lapping the field when Zitt erkopf stalled his KTM trying to pass a lapper. Young immediately assumed second w ith Terry Fowler moving into th ird. Zitterkopf managed to get restarted in fourth. Young sensed that Kalos was tiring and moved up to Kalos' rear fender for the remaining three laps. Another battle royal raged, but Kalos managed to hold off Young for first. Young was second, Fowler third, Zitterkopf fourth and the first rider from the Northwest, Kenny Olsen, was fifth. The second moto was similar to the first as Sun and Hart led into the first tum and were immediately passed by Zitterkopf, Kalos and Young. Zitterkopf never looked back on his way to the second-moto win, but the battle for second was unbelievable, as Kalos and Young continued their duel from the first moto. S Tom Girard (1) earned his fourth Regional championship and the 1994 CCS Great Plains Championship with a pair of victories at the Heartland Park Topeka RR, Kalos' Husaberg was just too strong for Young's overweight and underpowered ATK, and Kalos took secon d, w ith Young in third. • The battle for fou rth w as eq ua lly competitive between Fowler and jus t about every Northwest rid er. First, Fowler had to pass Sun to earn fourth . Then, Fowler had to fight off Hart, and finally, Beyer. Fowler's front wheel was losing spokes with each lap, to the point that when he crossed the finish line, the wh eel was bouncing off the inside of the front tube . Fowler held Beyer off by less than one bike length to fin ish fourth. Beyer came in fifth and yo un g Erik Anderson from Arizona in sixth. ('N Results PRO 0 1A: 1. Shaun Kalas (Hbgl; 2.
