LAKE ODESSA, MI.AUG. 14
Twelve-year-old Brandon Rose taught some of
the old boys a few new tricks when he dove to
the insi de of the thin. dry groove to slea l the win
from Larry VanValkenburg in the Pre-1975 Vintage class at the 1-96Speedway Half Mile.
g
In the heat race, Rose could be seen checkin
out possible lines for the final, while Royal Raeing's David Valiket walked the thin, blue tightrope
to the finis h line several len gths ahead of Vanvalkenburg and Rose. A slip d uring the warm- up,
prior to the staging of th e fina l, wo u ld leave
Vallket a touch shaken and a bit more cautious of
the fresh ly watered track. The Bultacos got th e
jum p off the line in the main eve nt, with VanValkenburg leading Dale Cooper into turn three .
Rose took a lap to evaluate the situation then
quickly moved past Cooperdawn the wall side of
the front stretch. Rose shadowed the "taco" rider
for the next five laps and waited for an opening.
Patience paid off for Rose, and the opening came
when traction disappeared for VanValkenburg,
who was coming out of tum four to the white flag.
The invitation was wide open and Rose RSVP'd
immedia tely, slammed the door sh ut on VanValkenburg, and charged to the checkered flag.
Rose kept the adrenaline pumping as he and
Daniel Kauffman diced it up in the 200cc class .
The two danced peg to peg on the back stretch,
then split the slower traffic da w n the middle
and headed for the checkered flag wi de open
around tum four . The hold-on-to-your-seat run
would see Kauffman hang on to the advantage
by a half a whee l.
The Veteran class found Brian Hewson shako
ing his head as the Babka brothers surrounded
him on the start line of the final. Tim Babka took
the outside po ll by virtue of his faster heat win
with Hewson pulling up along inside him. But,
when Mike Babka took up residence beside Hewson, all he could do was throw his han ds up in
the air. The race was on at the first flash of green,
with the three Ho nda riders look ing for elbow
room during the next six laps. The Shoei /Vesrah /Marshall Dist.-sponsored Mike Babka gained
some breathing room when the three moved. into
slower traffic. Mike was able to hug the groove
while the other two slipped up and fell off the
groove, giving up several lengths in the p rocess.
With the win secured, Mike Babka was able to
Oi
confidently wheelie across the finish line. .

Scotty Brown wo n his fourth-straight U.S. Open
Speedway Cha mpionship at Bear Cree k Speedway. as riders from Sweden, Poland, Canada
and the eastern U.S. tried to take the title, but it
was Brown who cam e shining thro ug h with a
perfect score.
Brown 's toughest co mpetition w ere Polish
ride rs Sobek and Bo gd en M uszi nski. The
Muszinskis usually run the longer tracks but
always adapt quickly to the 1/8-mile Bear Creek
oval. Jeff Tre tera performed some pit thrashing
to make the show . Tretera was one of th ree local
regulars expected to challenge Brown for the
champions hip. After 20 heats, Kalvin Smith
came up one poin t shy, and Mark Maurer was
down two po ints need ed to qualify for the four
heat championship runoff.

Lou's l.eathers /Jus tice Bros./Terry Cable /
AlpineStar-backed machine went to the fina l
round of heats un defeated and would match up
against the only other un d efeated rider, Sobek
Muszinski. Tretera also lined up in the heat with
11 of a possible 12 points, making three of four
riders in the next-to-last hea t guaranteed a spo t
in the championship runoff. Shane Goodnight,
qualified to run heats wi th the top 16, got in
through the last cha nce qualifier and was still in
contention for a top-10 finish overall, lined up
fourth. In this main event preview, Brown kept
his perfect scare alive with Muszinski nipping
Tretera at the line for second and a solid 14point finish.
Bogden Muszinski needed a win in the final
heat ra ce to qualify for the championship . A
second-place finish would force a runoff with
Bear Creek regular, Smith. Bogden chased dawn
Canada's Chris Hesmer to take the win and go
straight to the championship series.
One lap into the first of four championship
heats, Sobek Muszinski broke his footpeg and
rode the seat to fourth place after taking the
jump on Brown. As Sobek repaired his peg, Bogden checked for the source of engi ne noises in
his engine that hadn't bee n apart in two years,
a nd Tretera readied his back- up bike. Brown
re laxed as his crew changed vita l flui ds in h is
[awe.
Despite some close action, Brown led Sobek,
Bogden and Tretera (in that order) to the finish
in each of the next three mains to take the champ ionship.
In flat track action Eric Kinsey out-powered
the Open class wi th Dan Reed taking yet another win in the Ute class and a third in the Open
class a board h is 250 . Kathy Italia topped the
50cc Youth class .
