dive un der the leader in the tight, left-hand tum five, before holding the Ducks at bay to the checke r for the win. WERA's Vintage Seriesxonrinued to show solid growth this past weekend. With a total of 69 entries on Saturday, several of the classes are becoming large enough to break out of their combined grids to run in a field of their own. William Bloom proved that he was back on form after undergoing hip replacement surgery earlier this spring. Bloom placed third in Vintage 6, using the race as a wann-up before corning back to take the win in Vintage S. Results Satunioy VINT 1: 1. Stanley Lipert (Hon); 2. 8r~ Morrison (Ouc:); 3. Buzzards blast Gran Carrera de Ensenada By Tony Tellier ENSENADA.B MEXICO,JULY 30 .C, The KDX200·mounted trio of Steve Steven s, John Alexan d er and Craig Sm ith kept up the pace, never slackin g off, and were rewarded by taki ng th e overall win in the Baja Pro motions Gran Carrera de Ensenada . The Dal Trubey /Tom Hendricks effort fell short due to mo tor problems, and the black and whi te CR of Tim Morton and Brian Schmuckle broke 10 miles from victory. The tight, five-lap, 225-miIe eve nt , actually run out of Cerro Col · orado, u tilized portions of the recent Baja SOD, including flowing streams plus a newly graded farm road . Trubey said that it was rough while othe rs thought that it wa s smooth. Only a few open sections favored the bigbore riders but they took full ad vantage of what high-speed areas there were. Trubey's first-starling KX ra n out to a two-minute lead over Schmuclde on the CR2S0 of Morto n. Schmuckle, in tum. had to deal with the concerted charge of Ch uck Dempsey, who trailed by onl y a few seconds, ove r the rock-studded outbound section. Equally aggressive, if not more so, was Team Green's Craig Smith, who was a last-minute addition on the Buzzards KDX. The Buzzards had to go without the help of regu1ar rider Billy McClintock. who was unable to get a last-minute reprieve from his job for the raoe. The Trubeys had to replace younger brother Jason , who got suddenly ill, with enduro rider Tom Hendricks. Dal Trubey fell while leading and hurt his left knee, leaving Hendricks to sold ier on alone . The Trubey green machine was eventually sidelined with what was reported as an RTV'd base gasket that had not been fully repaired. Morton's CR250 wa s able to make mincemeat of the Trubey effort by virtue of a concerted never-lift effort by Morton, the get-off by Trubey, and the green machine's souring mo tor. But then Morton had to deal with a flat rear tire . By the time Morton had passed the dou ble check and was in the sandy uphill wash on the way to the finis h,' his rear wheel could take no more, and the spokes pull ed out. Morto n legged it a mile b ack to th e last Check and radioed TNT Racing's Tom Wimberly to tru ck in a w hee l, b ut the SCORE ace 's assau lt was further blunted when he then ran out of fuel. The Honda's fuel tank had spilled a little too much into the sands after being laid over for the wheel change. Spying Morton's bike lying unattended in the wash, Buzzards anchor man John Alexander po u red on the anthracite and smoked through the slot-car-track-like section to the Finish and the Overall . "Now, can I get some ink?" th e reserved dental technician qu estioned. Th e Acerb is/Race Tech /Maxima /Excel/ AFAM /RK Cha ins/Lem on Grove Kawasaki 200' s Vey 's motor was kept wide-open all da y, if Smith and Alexander's performances were an y ind ication. John noted that " the Trubey's are our good-luck charm. We 'Ov era ll' whenever they are entered." Results 0 / A: 1. Stev e Slt"v~n s !John Aleund er ()(.aw); 2. IT of the season at the fabled c1 ubgrounds. Wertz negotiated the tree- lined course with relative ease aboard his m in t""CO~Eiti on vintage Triumph, besting brother Bill on both occasions. Don Bannerman came between the siblings in the heat, but a retu rn trip to the final would see Bill Wertz gain the advantage over Bannerman on lap four, then cross the finish line behind Skip. Hea t one of the 40+ class would see Bill lead Skip aro und the track, holding a steady advantage w hile hold ing off several brotherly love taps from Skip's front wheel. The final saw Skip hustle d own the back stretch after a quickerthan-greased-Iightning Pat May, who had gotten the holeshot. Pat's lead was short-lived after his Yamaha chose to shut down, coming through the hairpin on the first lap . May waved as Skip Wertz, Glen O'Boyle, John Zwerican, Bill Wertz and the rest of the field filed by. Bill Wertz challenged Zwerican's position on lap tw o, and the family feud was resumed. Skip enjoyed a 10length lead on Bill by the white-flag lap, whil e Bob Russell, Bill Leach and Mike Fink argued over third place behind them. Russell 's throttlehand made the final decision as he held it wid e open through the 5-curve the final time. Polka Dots club member Dean Maye r also d oubled on the da y with wins in the SOOcc and Vet 30+ class. The SOOcc final would see Mayer bl ast ou t of the hole a nd ope n a n immed iat e ad vantage on the field . Smith and McCloskey followed in hot pursuit while Sutliff worked his wa y up from a bad start to catch up to them by lap three. Sutliff took the ad vantage for second on lap four and then closed up as m uch ground as he could on the long-gone Mayer. McCloskey made the last move of the race as he ducked to the inside of Smith coming into the ha irpin. Mayer in herited the lead in t he Vet cla ss fmal from Mike Babka and won the race. Carroll thespoiler at Walden Motocross By Dick Archer WAlDEN,NY,jULY31 Well over 700 entries geared up to compete in the sixth and final round of the 1994 $100,000 Tucker-Rocky MX Championsh ip Series at Wald en Playbo y' s Club. The stage was set for one last grueling showdown between se ries points-leaders Barry Carsten and Ty Wallace, but much to everyone's su rp rise it was Pro /Expert Brian Carroll who showed up and showed down the leaders; and everyone else, for that matter. Carroll, aboard his blazin g whipped the entire field, winning an incred ible six out of six motos against som e very heavy competition in the 250cc/Open Expert, the Open Expert and the 25+ Expert classes. As the da y went on, Carroll got most of the heat from Carlos Coon, who was hot on his tail through ou t the 250cc/Open Expert and the 25+ Expert motos. Moto one of the 250ccOpen/Expert class saw Ty Wallace pull the holeshot, but his lead didn't last long, since Wallace went down on the first lap and was quickly overtaken by Carroll, Coon and Kurt McMi1Ien. As the 2a-minute-plustw o-lap moto continued, the three riders hammered at each other, with Carroll and Coon trading off the lead several times. Carroll held on to the win , with Coon and McMi1Ien taking second and third, respectively. Barry Cars ten wo rked his way up from mid-pack to finish fourth, and Wallace managed to salvage fifth. Moto two had similar results, with Carsten's fifth-p lace finish overall good en ough to wrap up the 2SOcc/Open Expert series win . The .l2Scc Pro /Experts set a blistering pace in both motos. In moto one, Wallace and Carsten d ashed away well ahead of the pack. With Wa llace in the lead, the tw o were but four seco nds vz.
