Austin tops Brid~estone tire days at Silverspnngs Motocross By Melissa Threadgill SILVERSPRlNGS, NY, JULY 31 Paul Austin was one of the big winners a t the Bridgestone tires-sponsored Silversprings MX, which featured the WNYSC's lar gest turnout of the year. A ll of th e overall win ners received a Bridge-stone tire whil e all other trophy winners went ho me wi th a discou nt certificate from many local and racing-re lated businesses. In the 201-0pen Expert cla ss, Austin took first in both mo tos for first overall. In the first mot o, Austin, on the Race Tools -sponsored Kawasaki, go t the holeshot followed by john Oes h le and Tod King . joe Elli n g ton was in fourth. Oeshle went d own and dropped back into seventh, putting King in second and Ellington in thi rd . Ben Trask, w ho wa s in fourth, passed Ellington. Then Tr ask got off the pa ce and dropped back int o fifth. King went down, along with Ellington, who dropped off into six th . While Au sti n opened up a lea d , jake Ellsw or th worked his way up into fourth an d Martin McDonald was in fifth . Trask later pulled off because of m echanical pr obl ems as Au stin took th e win, w ith King second , Ellswo rth thi rd and McDonald fourth. In the second m oto, Aus tin agai n got the holesh ot, followed by Chris Pecora, King, and McDonald . Aus tin, w ho wa s in first, and Pecora, in second , were battli ng it out when Pecora went down and d ropped back into forth . Ellington got a bad start but worked his way up into second while King was in thi rd . Pecor a pa ssed King, but Austin was unca tcha ble and took th e win, givin g him the overall. Dennisondominates Dunes GP By Mike Arno ld FARMINGTON, NM JULY24 , Ro und s ix of the New Mexico Desert Racing Club series saw Chris Dennison claim the 2SOcc Expe rt and overall win under the blazing sun at th e Du nes ORV recrea tion a rea near Farmington . The start dead·engine , with the riders st ra d d lin g th e fro nt wheel. The fir st row to launch fea tured the 1993 overall champion Rex Cameron a n d Ro b by Clauss , bo th pre-ra ce fa vor it es , a t the head of th e pack. De nnison was started in the thi rd row . From the start, Clauss began to open up a huge lead tha t las ted until he ra n o u t of gas m idwa y th ro u g h th e race. Ca m eron ass umed t he le a d b u t was in t he p roc ess o f be in g hunted d o wn by Dennison, w ho eve ntua lly ma de t h e p as s th a t wou ld secure th e win . Ca meron wo uld finish second w ith 30+ class winner Mike Medwin, aboard an RM 125, third. Jules Farm er earned the tru e-grit award for the day after an early race crash and a flat rear tire that res ulted in a five-minute stop to put on a new rea r-wheel setup. He charged back into fourth overall. Kei th Miller won overall in the Amate ur class, but the real surp rise of the race was Ryan O nan w ho rode his 1985 KX12S to the 200c c class win and to second-place ove rall in th e standings. All three rid er s posted convincin g first moto w ins , onl y to cras h in their seco nd motes and record DN Fs d uring a wild night of CRC Friday night motocross at Los Angeles County Raceway. Ande rson totall y dominated the first 125cc Novice moto. Mike Harris , Bob Arens and Kevin Tarwat er battled ove r second with Harris getting the nod at the finish and Arens holding off Tarwater for third. Anderson injured his right an kle when he went down ha rd in th e first tum of mota two , taking control for a lap before he, too , hit the dirt hard . Tarw ater and Harris swapped paint at the front of th e pack for two laps before the y also took some soil sa mples. Through attrition, Brit j ac kson found hi m self in the lea d when the checke rs fell. jackson 's 4-1 score gave h im the su rp rise overall victory. Harris recovered to finish third, and second ove rall. Casey Lytle eas ily topped the opening 125cc mot o ahead of D.j. Sweany and Nick Ma irose . Photo by Ben Breech HANOVER, PA,JUlY30 Georgie Price retu rned to h is roots, making one of his infrequent sta rts at Trail-Way Speedway highly profi table wi th a doub le win, whe n he easily topped the 600cc Pro and Sportsma n finals on his T-Shirts Etc./Moroney 's H-D /Pop Sw eet en /Taylor Whi te-sponsored Rotax. Also taking a pair of wins in the 80cc and 250cc B classes wa s Donnie Mu llen. Price's wins were fairly easy, as he grabbt.>d the lead from his uncle Bob Sweeten, Eddie Hid den and Ken Yode r. After four lap s, Mike Klopp had moved into third, w ith Hidden dropping to fifth. But nobody could catch Price, who led the race to the finish . The Pro fina l fea tured Hidden, Dallas Baer and Phil Libhart trailing Price. Libhart took third as he ent ered the third tum on the second lap and, after most of the race challenging Hidden, finally took second on the seventh lap. Price cruiSed to another win followed by Hidden and Libhart. In the 85cc fina l, jake johnson and Mull en jumped ou t to a lar ge lea d ove r Bru ce, Ingram and Ben Miller as they battled for the lead the en tire wa y. Wh en it loo ked like johnson had fended off Mullen's bes t stuff, he bobb led slightly as they came off the second turn on the fina l lap, and Mullen took the lead and the win . The 2SOcc fea ture found Mullen in front at th e s ta rt ever Mark Montg romery , Damian Koco vinos, an d Bronson Ruth. While Mullen was easil y in the lead , traveling bud dies Montgro mery and Kocovinos battled ov er se con d until Kocovinos took control of seco nd place for good on the sixth lap .
