Faria, Castro merciless at Costa Mesa Speedway By Orenthal James Photo by Jim Thorn COSTAMESA,CA,JULY 29 "Fl yin'" Mike Faria opened up the AMA summer speedway season at Costa Mesa Speedway in fine sty le by scoring the Scratch main event win on Fan Appreciation Night. Faria, who wo n back-to-beck Nati onal titles in 1990 and 1991, and cu rren tly leads the points a t all Souther n California tr acks, gave Costa Mesa fans a previe w of his p la ns for the main even t by racing to victo ries in his Scratch heat and semi. In the Scratch main, Faria was joined by Gary Hicks, jos h Larse n, Shawn McConnell and none other than returning visitor, Razzo the Clown. When the tapes went up Faria took the lead immediately from his number-two startin g pos ition, followed by Razzo and Hicks . Razzo slid his way into second place early in the race, and tried to ap ply press ure to the stre aki ng Faria. But as the race un folded , Razzo's sty le - which , virtuall y mirrors that of 1987 Natio nal Cha mpion Brad Oxley but w ith more flair and speed was no mat ch for Faria, who held the good line on the blue gr oo ve and refused to yield. The ba ttle for Ha ndicap sup re macy came do wn to Eddie Cast ro and - once again - Razzo. Castro bolted from his post on the 3O-yard line to grab the lea d fr om fellow 30- yard -liners Andy Northrup and Don Od om while Raz zo got a good jump off the line and led the 4O-y ard-liners to the first tum.
