Munn reigns at Perris By Tony Alessi PERRIS, CA, JULY 23 Eight-year -old Chad Munn posted an incredible four-mote sweep in the 60cc Beginner and 50cc Op en clas se s in round six of the GFI Win A Truck Night Series at Perris Raceway . In th e SOccOpen class , Munn led every lap in both motes, then came right back and easily pi cked up his seco nd first -place trophy of the night in the 60cc Beginner class. Mike Alessi and Michael Parker kept an eye on the front-runners in the SOcc class, while Justin Lavoie and Ca rlos Gonzalez took up the charge in the 60cc mot os. John Sand ers, who has been seeking his first overall victory in the 12Scc Beginner class at Perris, once again, saw the elusive first-place trophy slip away. Grosser storms to Riverfront Motocross win By John Silva MARYSVILLE, CA, /ULY23 Scott Grosser raced his Suzuki to a pa ir of moto wins to take the 125cc Junior class at Riverfront Motocross. . . In the fir st 125cc Junior moto, Marysville regular Kelly Hammer hit the track w ith a holeshot, then tried 10 run away from Grosser, who held second place with Danny Finley giving chase in thi rd . Hammer knows h is way around the one-mile Riverfront MX track, but Grosser looked hard and found a 'few new-and- impro ved lines. By lap three, Grosser used one of those lines to roos t past Hammer and into the lead. Grosse r and Hammmer went at it for th e next two lap s, but Gros ser hung tou gh. Eventua lly, Hammer se ttled for seco nd while a sp read out field remained steady to th e finish flag. At the checkere d, the ord er was Grosser, Ha mmer, Finley and Eric Williams, followed by the res t of the field . Hammer nail ed the start pe rfectly again in mot o two , a nd aga in 'G rosser gave chase, with Will iam s, Stu Perry, Chris Martinelli , Patrick Winters, and Finley in tow . A battle soo n deve loped between Finley an d Winters, an d the ba ttl in g duo' s mom entum carried the m past Mar tinelli on lap two. Finley's p rogress wa s en ded by Perry , but Wint ers made a move and passed Perry to take over fourth place on lap three. Out fro nt, Hammer tried to hide from Grosser, but the wily Suzuki pilot kept Hammer in sight. At mid -race Finley found th e line to mov e past Perry, and set off after Wint ers. In the closing laps, Grosser clo sed in on Ha m mer, who appeared a bit fatigued as th e e ight-lap mota wore on. Grosser stole the lead on the final lap , to secu re first overall, with Hammer second and Williams third, both for the mota and overall. Armstrong grabs the gold at Frontier Days Motocross By John and Dawn Clifford CHEYENNE, WY,/ULY24 Cheyenne Cycle Club held its annual Fro n tier Day s MX in grand style with Terry Armstrong piloting his Yamaha to a well deserved victory in the SOcc Novice class. After pairing down 53 mini rid ers for the 4(}rider main ev ent, Greg Filbert and Jeff Boon e holesh ot the field as Armstrong, Josh Gutierres and Brandon Syddall gav e cha se. Boone took the lead until the whoops when Armstrong attacked both riders and passed for th e lead. Gutierres wanted to ron with Armstrong, bu t it took him two lap s to pass Boone. Armstrong and Guti er~ res broke away as Boone rode to a strong thi rd overall. Up front, Gutierres pushed Armstrong for three laps and even bumped into the leader's rear wheel while trying to pass , but Armstrong held the lead to the finish . In the Open Pro class Andy Atkins took top honors in the first moto foll owe d by Shawn Morgan, Keith Campbell, John Merwin and Jaden Barr . Afte r the start, Morgan m oved passed Atkins for the lead at the top of th e uphill while Wayne Balliett worked up to fourth as Merwin crashed out. The section was wet from the overnight rain, and many of the riders found it difficult to find traction. But Peters use d hi s en gine's rpm an d slipp ed the clutch just enough to keep the back wheel from spinnin g. The se ction featu red a n o ff-ca mber hill climb that man y of the Expert riders found to be impossible . Peters dropped a tota l of fou r po ints in this section while Kome r was next best with a total of 15 points lost for the da y. Matt Hughson dropped a lotal of 110 points for a first-p lace finish in the Adva nced class over th e seco nd place fini sh er , Pa u l Ch arron, who dropped 128 points for the day. Section five had a series of tigh t turns, off-eambe r turns, logs an d a rock-field climb uphill. Hughson fou nd th is sectio n to be easier than d id Cha rron; Hughson had two clea n rides for a total of eight p oint s lost in thi s sectio n. Ch arron had a harder tim e with one failu re, and a two-point rid e was his best effort in this sectio n. Da vid Knapp won the Intermediate cla ss over Benn Williamson with a total of 54 points to Willi am son's 58 points. Section one wa s a muddy uphill w ith ve ry little room at the bottom to get sta rted . The riders would hav e to find . the tra ction in just the right places. Phee By George Hodkinson DALLAS, TX,/ULY 24 MILLVILLE, MN,/ULY17 Honda-mounted Jerry Joiner took the top sp ot in th e Unlimited class at Cartwrights Motocross Park on a beautifully prepared KXR Honda. The eve nt promoter, John Cartwright, made th is an invitation-only race and had hea t races in each of the thr ee classes with th e riders qualifying for a 12-lap main event. In heat one of the Unlimited class, Cla y Hoenshell took the holeshot and the win with Jerry Joiner finishing in second and Milton Fryer in third. In heat two, it would be a battle of the teammate s as Lucky Nichols and Jack Yost started in first an d second with Jason Storm in third. Yost started to pr essure Nich ols through the wh oop s o n la p o ne, a n d N ichols w ound up o n th e ground. Yost cast a quick glance over his shoulder at the d owned Nichols as he moved into the lead . Storm also got by Nichols, who remounted in third. Yost took an easy win in heat two while Nich ols re-passed Storm with on e lap to go for second . In th e Fina l, joiner and H oen sh ell would ren ew their battle from th e heat race as Joiner too k the holeshot, followed closel y by Nichols and Hoenshell, wh o made short work of Nichols and moved into se cond befor e the end o f lap one. Joiner, in the meantime, had the suspension setu p on his KXR perfect for the whoop section, and he pulled away from Hoenshell on each lap only to hav e Hoen shell dri ve deeper into the turns trying to make up ground. It wa s not to be, because Joiner held off th e determined Hoenshell to take the Unlimited win. Peters bottoms Lockport Trial By Don Allis L OCKPOR T,NY,JULY23 Ra y Peters continued his dom inance of the Expert class with a convincing win in District 4 trials at Lockport. Peters dropped a scant 33 points to claim first place in the Expert class over the secondplace finisher, Mike Komer, who had a total of 72 points for the day. Section three wa s one of Mike Wiedmeyer put in solid rides at the Spring Creek MX, winning three of the four motos he en tered and topping the 250cc B class via I-I molo finish es. The da y saw its share of double class winners as seven riders claimed wins in two classes. At the start of the fir st 250cc B moto, Kye Longtin grabbed th e hol eshot followed by Jeff Cemensky, and Wiedmeyer . By the completion of lap one Longtin had fallen back to fourth as Wiedmeyer wa s in the lead with Cemensky and John Meyer in tow. By th e third of five laps Wiedmeyer held a large lead on second-place Meyer with Lome Duboi s moving up to third as Cemensky dropped back in the pack. At the finis h it wa s Wiedmeyer with a 25- sec ond lead over second-place Meva w ith Justin Erk.es moving up to third. Dub ois was fourth, and Allan Shuros rounded out the top five. At the start of moto two, Shuros nailed the ho leshot with Wiedmeyer and Stephen Kizer in tow. Wiedeymer built his lead on the pack on the first lap as Dubois moved through traffic to cla im second in front of Shuros. On lap th ree, Wiedmeyer went d own but wa s abl e to remain in third place behind Dubois - who had inh erited the lead - and Shuros. The trio remained all the way to the finish , and Wiedmeyer was able to regain the lead by moto's end.
