Faria doubles again at Glen Helen Speedway By Elaine Jones ' Photo by Jim Thorn SANBERNARDINO, CA,JULY 20 11 was BMW night at Glen Helen Speed way and Mike Faria gave the man y Beemer owners a lot to cheer about as he captured wins in both main eve nts on the largest regular spee dway track in Southern California. After a few weeks hiatus, the championshi pstyle Scratch format was back in place, and after four rounds, Faria was tied w ith Eddi e Castro, each having 14 points. Charlie Venegas was sitting alone with 12, and Josh Larsen , back from Europe, squeak ed into the Scratch main with 10. Faria drew the pole with Castro in tw o, and Faria and Larsen in thr ee and four, respectively. The gate went to Faria, and Larsen was right wi th him whil e Castro was held at bay when he couldn 't get to the outs ide and get the 22-inch tire he was runn ing int o the d irt . Ven egas, in fourth, couldn't figure out w he re Castro was going to be, and, after a couple of tries, decided not to press for the pass. Faria crossed the strip e for the win with Larsen, Castro and Venegas finishin g second thr ough fourth. 11 took Fa ria three lap s to come fro m th e eighty ya rd line and tak e the lead from Mitch Ha ll. Larsen took a little longer, since he had to ge t by Jer em y Ad en , who did an excelle n t job hold ing him off. Larsen would get the seco n d w ith Aden third . Six sideca r teams go t the fans on their feet as Gardner and Lynch broke on top with Ho rsley a n d Medberry a clo se second , and McIintyre and Ketcham third. Robey takes Westmoreland Olympiad Motocross By Sheri Cothran WESTMORELAND, KS, JULY17 Afte r co m pe ting in four se para te events, Rob Robey was the overall winner at the first annual Outlaw Motocross Series Olympiad hosted by the NorthEast Kansas Motocross. Riders comp eted in three separate tests , the first of which was the hare scrambles course, followed by IT scrambles and then motocross. Th e hare scra m b les portion of the event sta rted w ith the Expert class fre ight-training through the woods. Chris Hunter, Robey and Chad Spidell sliced and diced back and fourth through the woods thr oughout the two-l ap test with Robey and Spidell arriving at the scorin g area side by side . Robey took the first position by a fraction of an inch . Slick course conditions took th eir to ll on so me; a s lop-cove re d Bill Ho ld ing exited the competition after on ly one lap . Tony Gr oves took the holeshot in the Amateur class only to lose his po sition after crashing during the first lap . Of all the Amateur ride rs in the hare scrambles, Clint McDon ald and Tony Edwa rd s were considered the pre--race favorites. However, Edwards stuck his RMX into the side of an extremely muddy creek bank while trying to mak e a move on Groves early in the first lap. McDonald's luck wasn't much better when he slid off the trail , burying his KDX over the rear wheel in a silt bar. In a good display of spo rtsmanship, Groves and Edwards both stopped to help the poor McDonald. As the mud continued to take its toll on the favored front-runners, Jerem y Fund moved into th e lead to take first in the test ah ead of Rob Good win and Jeff Hoov er. The IT scram bles test o ffered some of the m ost thrill in g raci n g ever seen on th e onl y cou rse of this type in Kansas. Spidell was forced off of the course when four riders attempted to race abreast throu gh the second tum before the comp letion of the first lap , cau sing a restart of the race. After the rest art , Hunter, Robe y, and Spid ell occup ied the top three po sitions to the finish, respec tively. The much awaited mot ocross test was even more challeng ing as a "no air" rul e wa s established to add ano ther challenge to an extremely air happy group. Track officials had the pleasure of disqualifying the entire Expert class wh en the rule proved to be too much for all of them. The Amateur dass faired much better with only two disqualifications , allow ing "the underdog" Tony Edwards to take th e honors ahead of John Knopp and Rob Goodwin. In the 80cc class, after five disqualifications, Josh Brychta, Jason Goodwin and Michael Fasse arri ved home to tak e the first three spots. Th e 60cc class was the only class to compete in this test without any disqualifications. Jared Robey finished in front of Sean Hammell. Mike Faria (9) proved to be unstoppable at Glen Helen Speedway, manhandling the competition for victories In both main events. : Results Hare Scrambles AM : 1. Jeremy Fund (l
