Team Suzuki took over the lead in the last 10 minutes of the fou r-hour race when the lead ing Virginia Breeze Racing Yamah a, with ride rs Glenn Szarek and Chris Taylor, stopped on the course with a dead battery. Team Suzuki averaged 88.75 mph on the 2.5 mile lRP road course for their fifth win of the season for the Lake Elsinore, California based team. Cy cle Mo tio n / Team Pru de n tial finished third on a Honda with Ma rk McDaniel and Dave Deveau han dling the riding chores. The race was reminiscen t of the April race at Road A tla n ta where Virginia Breeze had a certain win before a fuel p um p failed on the ir Yamaha, giving Team Suzu ki the victory. Virginia Breeze Racing led the early stages of the race, but lost the lead when rider Glen Szar ek ran off the track at the end of the first hour. Team Suzuki then took over the lead which it held most of the race. Thi ngs wen t s moo t hly for Team Su zuki riders Martin and Batey, even though both riders had to deal w ith 51 other bikes on the cou rse . It w as th e biggest end urance field of th e season and passi ng sl ow e r ri ders became almost an art for the top teams. "It was p oi n t a n d sq ui r t through grou ps of fiv e a n d six bikes all da y long," said Team Suzuki' s Martin . "Most of th ese guys are p retty experienced so passing wasn't as bad as it may have seemed. Ev ery once in a while someone would get nerv ous and mak e a qu ick move to one si de or th e other w hen the y hea r d me co ming up on them. Those wer e the on ly sca ry moments." At th e end of th e fi rs t hour Team Suzuki and Virginia Breeze had already put a lap on the rest of the field. With Szarek's off-track excursion, Team 5uzu. ki was already 27 seconds ahead of Virginia Breeze after 60 minutes of racing. Cycl e Mo tion /Team Prud ential r a n alone in th ird. Heading up the rest of the field was Red Hot Racing 's Pat Kenney and Chris Hughes. Team Suzuki put a la p on Virginia Breeze during the second hour. Cycl e Motion /Team Prudential ran out of gas on the course at the end of the second hour and fell an~ther lap to the leaders. Things might have been worse for Cycle Motion/Team Prudential had they not had radio communication to their crew in the pi ts. "I rad ioed in that the bik e was runni ng ou t o f ga s," De veau expla ined. "Our guys used a pit bike to get the gas out to me and fortuna tely we didn't lose all that much time." . The team on the move in the second hour was Ar cli g h t Racing . Ar clight . moved to fourth and was closing in on WERA SunocoJPerformance Machine National Cycle Motio n; and they briefly took over Endurance Series th ird whe n Cycle Motion had its gas problem s. Unf or tu nate ly for Arclight, Round 6: Indianapolis Raceway Park they were abou t to expe rience problems of their own . The ba ttery d ied on the Arclight Honda costing the team all the gro u nd the y made during the second hour. Red H ot Racing and Team Pearls were battling it out in the Heavyweight Supersport class. Red Hot lost ground in the third hour when Hughes got pushed off the course by lapped traffic at the high-speed tum one. The team lost a lot of time getting the bike back on the By Larry Lawrence course and back underway. " It was cooked halfway t hrough the r ace ," sai d La n n y Allen. "We had to alter our riding style to make it to the finish." Despite the tire mix-up, Ohio Supe rbike m ana ge d to win the Med iumweight Superbike class and take fifth overall. Airp ort Racing followed up its first win ever a few weeks before at Putn am Park with win num ber two in the Med iumweight Superstock class. Riders Ken Melville and Scott Mcfad den led their class the entire d ay. Things wen t haywire for Team Suzuki in th e fi na l half-ho ur of the r ace. Batey was riding the bike when sud denly his foot slamme d off the peg to the gro und while traveling at over 100 mph. "I thought I was highsid ing," sai d Bate y. "I lo ok ed d own and 1 ha d no footpeg and the shifter was dangling on the ground." Bate y quickl y pu lled into the pits. The Team Suzuki cr ew assessed the damage and sen t him back ou t for one mor e lap while they gathe red the necessary parts to make repairs. Batey had to circulate around the track in third gear and in the process lost the lead to Virginia Breeze. Tensions were high in the Team Suzuki pit. By the time repa irs were made, Virginia Bre eze h eld a s oli d lead a n d appeared to be heade d to certain victory . The mood in the Virginia Breeze pit w as jubilant w ith ju st 10 m inutes remainin g in the race. No sooner ha d Virginia Breeze taken the lead when suddenly Szarek and the team 's Yamaha rolled to a stop on the front straightaway. The crew frantic ally moved the bike back around the pit wall and filled th e tank, thinking that the . bike had ran ou t of gas. They still had the lead when Szarek pulled awa y again, but unfortunately for the team fuel was not the problem: it was a dead battery. A couple of laps la ter the blue and yellow Virginia Breeze Yamah a d idn't come around . Suddenly the bike appeared at the far end of pit row being pushed. Other teams rushed to the rescue , helping push the bike back to the Virginia Breeze pits, but it was too late, Team Suzuki had resumed the lead and jus t a few m inutes remained on the clock. With a stroke of luck Team Suzuki Endurance rolled to yet another victor y, one of the more dramatic of the the team's 97 endurance wins. ~ Indianapolis Raceway Park Indianapolis, Indiana Results: July 23 OVERALL: 1.
