AMA/Prostar and the In te rnatio nal Drag Bike Association hav e announced the r estructu r ing of th ei r re spected Sportsman cat egories for the 1995 sea son. Both sanctioning bod ies ha ve agreed that present Heads-up indexes are out-da ted and are in n eed o f a nationw ide change. The new catego ries w ill be Top Sportsman (7.90), Super Comp (8.90) and Super Gas (9.90). The three categories will allow room for further expansion of the sport and a more concen trated effort in class sponsorship, according to AMA/Prostar. Former National MX and Supercross Champion Jeff Stanton will take over as a consultant to the Honda factory motocross team next season, according to American Honda. Stanton, who recently announced his retirement from racing, will se rve as a coach in all aspects of motocross competition, including providing advice on machine setup, and rider techniques and conditioning. "We've needed this kind of help with our team for some time," Honda team manager Dave Arnold said. "Jeff's incredible knowledge of the sport and his ability to analyze rider and machine problems will be a real bonus to the young riders on our team." The 1-800COLLECT-backed team currently consists of Jeremy McGrath, Steve Lamson, Doug Henry and Stanton himself. Honda's 1995 RSl25R and RS2S0R road race models will be exhibited at the AMA U.s. Superbike National Championship round at Sears Point Raceway in Sonoma, California, on August 19-21 and also at the final round of the series at Road Atlanta in Braselton, Georgia, on September 16-lS. The RSI25 is totally new and features a 43.5 horsepower engine, an inner rotor-type generator that substantially reduced crankshaft mass, as well as a balancer shaft. The bike will also featu re a side-loading cassett e gearbox for simplified gearing changes. The RS250 featu res updates whic h incl ud e re vised front and rear d amper settings, new Brembo brakes and a more aerodynamic sea t bump. According to World Superbike Series promoter Maurizio Flammini, everything is in order for Indonesia to run its first-ever World Championship road race at the Sentul circuit near Jakarta. "Soearto (the son of the President of the Indonesian Republic) has guaranteed that everything will go smoothly," Flammini said. "The sixth race of the Superbike World Championship will be one of the most important events of the year in Indonesia and the president of the Republic is al ready scheduled to attend it ." The race will be held on August 21. A Dick Mann-designed race track will be used for the AHRMA Nor-Cal MX Series at Silver State Raceway in Carson City, Nevada, on July 30-31. Senator Ben Nighthorse Campbell (D-eO) went trail rid ing during the July congressional recess as part of a n effort to hi ghligh t the importance of recreational trails . Co-sponsored by th e AMA and the American Recreation Coalition, the day-long event featu red Senator Campbell hiking, horseback riding, bicycling and riding a trail bike at various sites in his home'state of Colorado. A specially prepared Harley-Davidson military motorcycle was on hand for Senator Campbell to ride in the Pike National Forest near Sedalia, Colorado. Campbell was joined by many cycle enthusiasts, includ ing executives of the Harley-Davidson Motor Company. Several guest speakers lauded Campbell's efforts to bring federal funds back to the states for recreational trails. Campbell was given a commemorative plaque by Jim Peasley, co-director of the Pikes Peak Motorized Trail Maintenance Association, which praised Campbell's support of the National Recreational Trails Trust Fund. Also speaking at the trail site was Forest Service District Ranger Pam DeVore, who commended cyclists for their cooperative efforts to maintain and improve trail riding opportunities in the Rampart Range area of the Rocky Mountains. Campbell spoke to the group briefly before the trail ride. In his remarks, he stressed the importance of trails for all Americans, and also vowed support for the AMA's position on the controversial California Desert Bill. Quarterley finished second in both legs to win his first-ever WERA F-USA National. David Sadowski finis hed second overall on his Ho nda CBR900. The Buford, Georgia, res ident finished fifth in the first leg and won the second, setting a new motorcycle lap rec ord in th e process. Defen ding F-USA Champion Chuck Gra ves ended the day third ove rall wi th a fourth in the first race and a third in the secon d. The fi rs t leg was won by Va lvoline Suzuki's Michael Martin, but Martin struggled to a ninthplace finish in the second leg to end up sixth overa ll. Sadowski continues to lead the F-USA Championship point standings with 37 points. Scott Gray, fifth at Ind y! and Rich Oliver, fourth today, are tied for second in the title chase with 28 points each. Rich Oli ver easily won the Goodridge Formula II race at Indianapolis Raceway Park, with Aprilia-mounted Chris 0 ' Aluisio finishing second, just ahead of Japan's Takahito Mori. Fourteen-year-old Nicky Hayden won the RK Chain Formula III race on his Honda. Hayden topped championship points leader Kevin Murray and Doug Carmichael in the 3O-lap final. In other WERA action at Indianapolis Raceway Park, Team Suzuki Endurance's Michael Martin and Tray Batey took over the lead in the last 10 minutes of the fourhour Sunoco Performance Machine National Endurance race to beat Virginia Breeze Racing and Cycle Motion/Team Prudential. School at Willow Springs Raceway in Rosamond, California, on August 19 and December 19. According to Team Suzuki Endurance Advanced Riding Schools, Graves' contractual arrangements w ith Team Hammer, Inc ., preclude his instructing, assisting or participating in any way at any school except the Team Suzuki Endurance Ad vanced Riding School. Better late than never dept: Spaniard Luis Maurel (Hon) won the 250cc class at the Open Ducados Road Race Series round in Calafat, Spain, on July 10. Maurel topped Jose Barresi (Yam) and Juan Borja (Hon). The 125cc race was won by Jorge Martinez (Yam). Californian Jimmy Filice didn't race in w hat was the fifth round of the Ducados Cup Series because of illness. Filice isn't su re if he picked up a stomach virus or if he was hit with a bout of food poisoning. " It was the first time I ever missed a race from being sick," Filice said. There is a chance that the non-defending AMA 250cc Na tional Champion will con tes t th e rest of the 250cc World Champion sh ip fo r Team Ma rlboro Rain e y if Kenny Roberts Jr . continues to have problems wi th his still-healing broken arm. Filice will also likely rid e in the final two Du cados Series ro u nds and also in the season-end ing Superprestigio in Spain. Entries are still available for the Land of Enchantment Endurance Rally dua l sport marathon, but more importantly, if you're planning on attending, you need to get your entry in as soon as possible, so that the adequate lodging can be sec u red for the five-day, 1700-mile rally . A decision has still not been made as to who will ride on the American World Trophy and Junior World Trophy teams at the Tulsa, Oklahoma, International Six Days Enduro, on September 20-25. The ISDE board is planning to invite the top 19-20 riders to a training camp on Augus t 27-28, or September 3-4, and choosing the teams based on the riders' performance in the camp. Those riders who aren't named to either Trophy team will be on "high-power" Club teams. No location has yet been set for the camp. Team Green MX Supervisor's Ron Heben says that Kawasaki Team Green will, once again, provide technical trackside support and have emergency KX parts at both the NMA Ponca City GNC (August 2-6) and Loretta Lynn MX Nationals (August 8-13) . Team Green will also be giving away gift packs to all Kawasaki entered riders at the Loretta Lynn event, as well as host the 3rd Annual Kawasaki Tricycle Races - the winner taking home a new Scott Mountain Bike bicycle.
