Denton p ut h is Mic hae l's H ondaYamaha /Powerba r/ Yoko/FMF/C.P.E./Tom Delor eto-sponsored Yama ha ri ght on the rear fender of Schwatka with Blackwell, Gary Walker, and Stu Perry in tow. After a couple of laps Kurt Favre, who had started mid- pac k, moved his Ho nda past Perry into fifth spot. Up fron t, the battl e continu ed to rag e between Schw atka and Denton un til Den ton's yz came 10 a sp uttering halt, givi ng Blackwell the break he need ed as he took over second and set off after Schwatka. Mean wh ile, Favre had continued his relentless charge and had moved past Walker to take third. By the ha lfwa y mark, Schwatka and Blackwell had managed to pull clear of Favre, wh o in tum he ld a comforta ble distance ove r Walker. Schwa tka and Blackwell continued to dice hard with Blackwell trying every poss ible line to pa ss, but to no avail, as Schwatka managed to hold off every ad vance made by Blackwell. As the white flag wa ived, Blackwell made one last desperate attempt to pass Schwatka as by squaring off a comer early in an attempt to dive under Schwatka at the exit, but he timed his move a little to close, hitting Schwatka's rear tire and going down. Blackwell quickly remounted but was now in danger of being passed by a rapidly closing Favre. At the checkers it was Schwatka taking the win ahead of Blackwell, Favre , Walker, and Darrell Valasek. who had started 10th and worked his way up to fifth. Resulls P/W: 1. KyleCorchero (YAm); 2. Olson ousts oldies at Carlsbad Motocross By Bruce Forinash CARLSBAD, CA, JULY2 Alan Olson won the overall in the 40+ Expe rt class with back-to-be ck wins during round one of th e six-race Summer Series on the Racin g Enterprises-promoted USGP track at Carlsbad Raceway. The first mo to began with an incred ib le holeshot by Dave Cox who out accelerated and out braked a fu rious bar-ban gin g charge by 13 other riders in the com bin ed 40+ Expe rt and Intermediate classes . Cox's 10-bike-length lead was short -lived because within seconds of entering the ma in track, Pr o-Valve's Nick Costell o roosted by the surprised Cox who was followed by Pisa rski, Kohler, and Olso n, in positions third thru fifth respecti vely. Co stello, a regu la r a t the tr ack and fresh from a class win the weekend before, carved the best lines in the da mp clay and sand for several laps until Olson passed him on lap four. By the middle of the fifth lap, the top five finis hi ng po siti ons (for both motos) were decided with Olson taking the win by margins of over 30 seconds, followed by Kohler, Costello, Pisars ki, and Weisel in positions second thru fifth respectively. The second mota began with another closely packed cluster of riders turning onto the main track, but this time Pisa rski took the hol eshot with Costello r ight in tow. Pisarsk i, an ace mechanic during the week, probably needed to realign his rear wheel after Costello's continuous two lap effort to pass; but finally, Costello jammed his motorcycle into a chain link fence. While Costello struggled to free h is Honda, Olson, Kohler, and Weisel sped by. Possibly the most impressive ride of the day came as Costello finally re-entered the race, took over fourth position within two laps, and, at the bottom of the famous Carlsbad Freeway downhill, passed the tiring Pisarski to earn a third place trophy and valuable series points. Olson, a constant winner, once aga in di splayed the smooth, consistent and fast style he is known for, and took the chec kered flag first again for this mota and for the overall win. HANOVER, PA, Y9 With the retirement of Warren Diem, the Veteran and 6lXkc A classes at Trail-Wa y Speedway ha ve been thrown open to new or different winners. After a rain shower dela yed the start of the race over an hour, Bob Sweet en came back to take the Vete ran and Sportsman classes while Todd and Rick Winsett used the sam e machine to take the 6lXkc Pro and 6lXkc A finals, respectively . After breaking his regular ride in practice, Todd Winse tt borrow ed th e Lew Woods / Mcgrane Racing Rota x that his cous in, Rick, was going to run in the 6lXkc A. He jumped in front of Dallas Baer, Mike Hader, and Scott Saunders at the start. Hacker took second as they completed the third lap and tried to cut into Winsett's lead, but could gain no more than tw o lengths by the end . Swee te n jumped ou t in front of Rich ard Foa rd, jim Hollister and Lowell Wherley at the start of the Veteran final. Foard slipped back to fourth after the second lap , se tting up the top five finishers. For the first time in ove r two seasons, a nonVete ra n class ride r grabbed th e lead as Rick Winsett led Ken Mohler, j im Hollister and Mike Klopp . While the top four stayed ou t fron t, the only race was for fifth betw een Dave Lesniak, Paul Lyn ch and Lowell Whe rley, with the nod going to Lesniak. Sweeten came back to wi n the Spo rts ma n class, a ru n-w hat-ya-bru ng class open to any rider w ith the sig n-up fee.
