TN,JULY 10 lo r id a r id er Ricky Ca r m ich ael pulled off triple-class wins at the 10th Annual Kawasaki Volunteer State Motocross Championship. Wea ther played a big part in th e event this year, as the approximately 500+ riders saw everything from sun to rain, including a 3D-minute shower Sunday afternoon. Other than the one show- F (Above) Ricky carmichael raced his KX80 to wins In the Senior Min i, Super Mini and SChoolboy classes. The Schoolboy win came against several l25cc machines . Here, ha dices with Paul Currie (347), Shawn SChultz (351), Ric hie Horton (20), Chad Lough (97), Jim Chester (471) and Nathan Ramsey (79)- 44 er, overcast skies and temperatures in the mid-80s made for ideal racing conditions . The Schoolboy class was ano ther matter, as Carm ichael fought tooth and nail for his win. The first Schoolboy moto was WOn by Team Green's Robbie Horton , with Carmichael crossing the finish line hot on his taiL Here Carmichael was at a big disadvantage since he was riding an 80cc bike, while Horton was aboard a ' 125, but he paced the bigger bi ke of Horton nonetheless. In the sec o nd m oto , Ca rmichael squeezed out the holeshot with Ho rton in tow . The two were within thr ee bike lengths of each other lap after lap, wi th Horton challenging on the inside while Carmichael held his line. The battle continued all th e way to the fla g, w ith Carmichael hold ing th e edge by just inches. In the las t tum of the last lap, Horton cut a good inside line up finishline hill. The duo sailed across the finish with Carmichael inches ahead. They w er e so close tha t they collided in midair and bo unced off each other wh en they touched down, but both managed to stay up O two wheels. n Jim ' s Moto rcycle Sales-sponsored Michael Brown took his Hondas to overall wi ns in the 250cc Pro, 400cc Fou rStroke Pro, and Open Four-Stroke Pro classes with a clean six-mo to sweep. Jim Chester , however, managed to keep Brown off of the winner's step of the 125c Pro class rostrum. Suzuki-mounted Chad Lough led the 125cc Pro class thr ough tum O in the ne first moto, with Na than Ra msey a nd Brown in tow . Ramsey charged into the lead going d own the s tai rste ps, but Lough was back in front before the lap was com ple te d . Br o wn wen t in s id e Ramsey going to the finish line on lap tw o, and then it was Brown chasing Lough. Brow n took the inside through an off-camber tum by the start line and it was hi s show fro m then on . Lough held on to claim second, w ith Ram sey breathing down his neck all the way. Chester had to spend the moto working his wa y back from a bad start to finish fourth, with Kevin Walker fin ishing fifth. In th e second moto, the sta rt ca rd was up and th e ra in was fallin g, but Ches te r ha m mer ed throu gh the firs t tu rn a nd in to t he lead. Walker a nd I Shawn Schultz were disputing over second place , while Lough, Jim Neese and Mike Nutter were layi ng in the first tum. Brown was last off the gate. Neese and Brown charged throug h the pack, but Brown went down, ruining his chances for a second-moto win. Up front, Chester was making no mistakes as he p ulled away to clai m the moto w in and overall victory with a 4-1 score. Walker held seco nd, but his 5-2 score couldn't beat Brown's 1-4 total for runne r-up h on ors. Lough finis hed fourth overall with 2-5 scores. Th e 250cc Pro class sa w Neese leap out front with Brown applying pressu re. They diced for five lap s befor e Brown to o k th e lead in the woods section. About the same time, Neese's hand lebar cla mps broke, sending him fo r a soil samp le and giving Brown an easy win. In the mea ntime, Lough and Ramsey continued their earlier battle, with Walker wa tching from behind in fourth . Ramsey got thenod for second, with Lou gh , Walker and Paul Currie completing the top five. Schultz led moto two through th e firs t turn and held the lea d for a lap before going down and surrendering th e lead to Brown. Ram sey also h ad p rob lem s after gati ng second, and slipped back to sixth. Up fron t, Neese was chasing Brown but co uld n't get close enough to challenge, thus Brow n captured the win. Walker, Chester and Ramse y followed Neese across the finish line. The 30+ A class saw a r ematch between two masters of the sport: Ron "Wirehead " Jon es and Alan Andreu. Jones WOn th e first moto, but Andreu was pacing him all the wa y, learning his lines and the track. The second moto saw Jones lead the ea rly part o f the race, bu t, w hen it counted, Andreu cha rged by to collect the win and overall. Jones came back to claim the Op en Amateur class title w ith double-moto wins over Larry Sparks. The 25+ A class saw North Carolina's Mike Andrews dominate over Andre u and Aaron Bollinger. The hottest battle involved Bollinger and Andreu for second, with the latter claiming the po sition via 3-2 scores.
