WERA National Challenge Series Birthday boy Batey wins big By Larry Lawrence .Mr. MERlDAN, IN ,JULY10 ray Bateyspent his birthday cleaning up at the WERA National Challenge Series at the Putnam Park Road Course. Batey, who turned 34, rode a pair of Valvoline-sponsored Suzukis to wins in the Michelin 1100cc and 750cc Superstock races, earning him $1000 in Suzuki contingency money . Batey also borrowed the Keith Perrytuned Team Suzuki Endurance GSXRllOO and blazed to a new track record of 1:13.50 (88.163 mph), breaking a two-year-old record held by Valvoline Suzuki teammate Chuck Graves. Batey had been unofficially clocked at better than the old track record during the WERA National Endurance race on Saturday. So during Sunday's sprint finals, Batey was sent back out on the endurance bike in the Formula One final a nd the official WERA clocks started running. Geoffrey Wilson, riding another Suzuki GSXR1100, stayed close to Batey for a couple of laps before the Tennessee rider hit the gas en route to the win and track record. Batey's next race was the 750cc Superstock final, where he would have to deal with Valvoline Suzuki teammates Steve Patterson and David Stanton, as well as a host of other riders hoping to cash/ in on the g enerous manufacturer contingencies available. Batey, already warmed up from the Formula One race, too k the lead at the start. Stanton and Patterson were no t far behind in a battle for second. On lap three, Paterson; wh o was rid ing with a heavil y padded righ t hand after suffering blisters in the endurance race, reached for the front brake head ing into the Bus Stop tum. With the heavy padding, Patterson couldn't get a good feel for the brak e and he grabbed way too much, causing the fro nt wheel to lock up on his Suzuki. Patterson' s hand was jerked off the ba r. As he tri ed to reach again for the front brake he made heavy contact with Stan ton. The impact tore Stanton's leathers wide open but he was able to sta y up. The same could not T be said for Patterson, who crashed heav ily, his bike flip ping end over end. Patterson escaped with only minor injuries and raced later in the day. Meanwhile, Bat ey was long gone and wo n the race by over six seconds. Stanton held second and Putnam regular Daniel Lowry finished third. The victory ga ve Bate y a solid 22-point lead in the series stan dings over Stanton. It was more of the same in the Michelin lloocc Superstock final. Batey, turning 1:14 lap times, split from the field ea rly and n ever looked bac k. Batey cruised to a 10-second win over Stanton. Robert Marsh overcam e an early battle with Mark Junge to na il down third. In the 600cc Sup ers tock race, it was a three-way battle for th e w in bet ween Honda-mounted Tim Tillman, seri es points leader Mike Reed r id ing a Kawa saki, and Ken Melville, also on a Honda. In the middle sta ges of the race, Tillman built up a two-second lead bu t it wouldn't last. In the closing laps, Reed and Melville teamed up, using thedraft and pulling to within 10 bike lengths on the white-flag lap. Tillman h eld up under the pr essure and held on to narrowly win over Reed and Melville. Tillman won $300 from Honda for his victory. Kevin Murray and Chris Rogers ar e locked into a great battle for the WERA , RK Chain Formula Three title. Rogers championship hopes were seemingly dealt a serious blow when his bike blew up in practice. Youngster Chris Ulrich stepped in to save the da y for Rogers. Ulrich was to have made his professional racing debut, but offered his bike to Rogers instead. In the race, Murray got th rough the horde of fast-starting four-strokes in the class to take the earl y lead, while Roadracing World editor John Ulrich battled with Rogers for second , Those three riders quickly separated them selves from the rest of the field, turning lap times in the 1:21 range. On the third lap, Murray clicked off a near-perfect lap and pulled away from Ulrich and Rogers. Mu rray went on to win by 10 seconds .over Ulrich. It was his third straight win in the series. Mu rray took ho me $750 for the win, and the series lead. Rogers ra n in to bad luck w hen the front brake assembly on the bike he borrowed started to vibra te loose. Despite . the p rob lem, Rogers held on to thi rd. Paul Black and Nancy Dewar, who got stuck behind th e slower four-strokes ea rly in th e race , finished fourth a nd fifth respectively. Jeremy Mouse r and Mike Laney had a good race in the Yamaha Seca II Cha llenge fina l. It was Mou ser who held off Laney by one second for the w in. Tom Rose finished thir d . ~ Putnam Park Mt.
