Procida MORENO VALLEY, CA, JUNE 25 Althoug h de nied a win in the 30+ Novice class, Carlos Johnston put the extra track time to good use as he worked his way through the pack to capture a d ouble-mote win in the Over-the-Hill Gang Intermediate Class at the third round of the U.S. Suz uki-sponsored Ford Ranger Give away Series at Starwest Supercross Park. In th e first OTHG mot o, Bob Wagner grabbed the holeshot with Scott Wallace hot on his heels . Behind them johnston, BillSchultz and the rest of the pack were sorting themse lves out an d jockeying for position. , Up front, Wallace made quick wo rk of Wagner before they hit the back straightway and was quickly in the lead. The top-three positions were close d uring the opening lap , and as Wallace an d Wagne r were riding ove r the finis h-line tabletop, they were suddenly surprised top find johnston soaring up over and past the pair and into the lead. Both johnston and Wagn er were do ing the big do uble and this allowed them to pull away from Wallace, who was doing everything in his power, including rid ing over his head, to keep the pair within striking range . But he had other problems; Eric Anderson was closing to his rear fender. Johnston , m ean w h ile, had co ntin ue d to expa nd his lead , leaving Wagner to deal with the ha rd-cha rging Anderson. Yamaha-mounted johns ton was able to cruise comfortably to the fmish line for the win. Wagner took a lonely second and Anderson was third . With everyone poised and waiting for the drop of the gate to start moto two, it was again Wagner leading everyo ne through the first tum. while Wallace and Dave Beal were keeping him company. johnston wa s fourth. but that wa s before the pack hit the back straigh taway where he motored his VZ250past Beal and into third. By lap two , johnston was chasing Wagner, while Wallace elected to single the big double and was passed by johnston in midair. With two laps remaining, and hav ing tried various lines to get around him, johnston elected to try passing Wagner the easy way , going full power down the back straight and then outbra king him going into the "Phantom" com er. Thomas quic kly moved Lindsey back to second as the field hit the back section of the course. Then Streit 's-backed Thomas pulled away from th e field, w hil e Andrei Boloni slipped by Smith for the fifth spot. Bantle and Shea ly battled for the third until Shealy doubled pas t Bantle at the halfway point of the se ve n-la p moto.
