Garroutte began his quest properly, with a .holeshot in his first mote, while the rest of the 2505 gave chase. With both Junio rs and Beginners on the track, the racers quick ly spread out Over the course. Garroutte made easy work of the many rockers, Whoops and double jum ps as h~ raced .unch allenged to the checkered flag, WIth DaVId HIghfill and Peter Crowell a distant second and third, respective ly. . . Moto two was deju vu, wi th Garroutte blast,lOg th rou gh the firs t tu rn in front a nd easily maintaining his d is tance from a ny wo u ld- be challengers. Highfill and Crowe ll stayed closer to the gassin' Garrou tte th is moto, b ut again had to settle for second and third place, respectively, for both the moto and overall score. In the first 12Scc Junior molo, Glen Williams thro ttl ed his Suz u ki to ch arg e ahead of Garroutte and the others upon exiting the first tum. Wllhams poured it on as he tri ed to d istance himself from the wild pack of 125cc Jun iors and Beginners. Throu gh the early part of the six-lap . race, Garrou tte seemed con tent to motor around in second, wi th thi rd-place rider Mike Miller a short distance behind. Although Garroutte made a charge late in th e race, th e order at the fini sh rema in ed : Wi lli a ms firs t, Garroutte second, and Miller third. . The leaders jammed th rough a sweeper, still bar to bar, and drag-raced the straight toward the far side of the track . Sizeable braking b u mps guarded the en tra nce to the next tum, an d b ot h W ill ia ms ' and Garroutte's bikes hopped a bit in the cho pped-up en trance to the tum. Contact was inevi tab le as no one gave an inch, and wh en it occurred, Williams lost control after his Su zuki popped out fro m under him, ca us in g WilUams to p lant himself in to th e ground like a seed. Richards wa sted little time and st uffed und ern eath Nunnally to take the lead, with Schneider takin g up the slack. Richards made the grandstand double d ouble look easy, and with nobody in fron t 10 slow ' him down bega n to p ull away fro m the pack. Padilla had gated midpack and was rid ing har d as h e disp laced Jason Sobiesiak at midmoto, then in a wild move over the triple, he jumped to the far inside and pa ssed Nunnally, Gibson, Schnieder and all in one move. He then set ou t after Richard s, bu t had a large gap 10 make up in order to be in a pos ition to challenge . Richards had other ideas, though, and as he took the white flag g lanced back to see the rapidly approaching Padilla. He immediately picked up the pace a notch and protected his lead to the finish line. Padilla had to settle for second ahead of Gibson. The mote-two start looked like a mad dash, as everyone wanted the h olesh ot and no one was backing off, bu t only one rider wound up leading the pack and that rider was Richa rd s, picking up where he left off in the first moto. Padilla had gated much better this moto and was running fourth unti l soaring by Nunnally on the "Leap," a 35-foot step-down jump. Padilla was charging ha rd and closing fast, and as the w hite ·flag ca me out for Richards, Padilla was on ly a couple of bike lengths away. The two went tooth a nd na il th rou gh the "Snake Pit ," side by side over the infield double, and it was a drag race down the back straightaway. The two ri d ers disappeared from sight momentaril y going into the "Phantom " comer, and the firs t rider to reappea r over the leap was Pad illa, with Richards now in tow. Padi lla carefu lly guarded his lead to the checkered to take the overall win with Richards earning second. Finis hing third was Gibso n with a pair of third-place finishes. Nu nnally held on for fourt h overall and Schne ider recovened from his fall to brea k into the top five overall with a 4Bday. . Results 60 (6--8): 1. Joshua Grant (l(aw); 2. ScottSimon (Kaw); 3. Derrickdevastating at LACRMotocross By Greg Robertson PALMDALE, CA, jULYl Les ton Derrick mad e a sh a mb les of the 12Scc Beginner class by running away and hidi ng to score two decis ive wins during California Raeing Club 's Friday nigh t motocross at Los Angeles County Racewa y. . Bo Leyva led the pack out of the firs t tum, but his reign was short-lived , as he wen t down and dropped to sixth on the opening lap. Derrick inherited the lead and said good-bye to the rest of the field. Jeremy Langham, Travis Smith and Shawn Dunne got into a heated argument over the runner-up position, with Smith prevailing by the midway point. Derrick's blistering pace had him seeing the checkered flag with a IS-second lead. Ley va wo rked back up through the pack from his firstlap fall to move around Smith and take a hardfoug ht secon d . Dunne was on Smith's rear fender for a close fourth. Derrick was untouchab le in the second moto, leading from start to finish, which left it to the riders behind him to prov ide the only racing. Leyva mo tored around Eddie Car et to run in second place for a lap before goi ng down and d roppin g to the back of th e pack.
