Schwartz again wen t wid e in the next corner, and Oxley slipped by to take second and set off in purs uit of McConnell. For the remaind er of the main eve nt Ox ley kept the p ress ure on McConnell, b ut because both riders were on the low line and neither mad e a mistake, McConn ell held on for the w in wi th Oxley finishing a close second. Cha rlie Venegas also passed Schwartz to take third while Rob Pfetzing finish ed fifth. As the riders lined up for the Han d icap ma in even t, Chism too k up residence on the 2D-yard line with lD-yard -liners Greg Ayers and jerry Black in fron t of him. When the gate wen t up, C hism wa sted no time in wor kin g up to the fron t-markers and passing them to establish an early lead . McConnell was searc hing for a sweep - a rarity at Costa Mesa - and he also qu ickly passed Ayers an d Black in p u rs uit o f Ch ism . McConnell ca ug ht up to him , bu t Chism had established himself on the gro ove and was n't about to give up the lead. Chis m rolled on to score the win with McConn ell coming in second. Edd ie Castro moved through the field from his s tarting position on the 40·ya rd line to finish th ird , while fellow 4D-yard -liner Pfe tzing finished fourth and Doug Nicol fifth. The Donahue Har ley-Davidson /AI Mu th HD/Ge ne ral Eng ineeri ng / Bie He / Ron Wo od / Storz/Tsubaki/ Maxima/Salty Dog Racing-sponso red Durel1e scored. a narrow victory over Kent Longcor in the first of two heat races to earn the pole position. Next to him sat Bill Hoffmiester. y DureUegrabbed the holeshot at the star! of the ID-la main event and led Longcor, Tony Kohner, p Randy Triplett , Norb Gregory, Eric Brouhard and the rest of the pack down the back straight. Meanwhile, Hoffmiester was mired in the back of the pack. By lap two, Triplett slid By Kohner for third , with Brouhard bumping Grego ry down to sixth on lap four. At the ha lfway point , Dure lle was enjoying a comfortablemargin that he would co ntinue to extend on his way to the checkers over lonely second-place finisher Longcor. Th ird place was s till und ecid ed un til t he seventh lap wh en Kohner slipped by Tripl ett to secure the posi tion for good . Brouhard fin ished fifth ahead of a resurgent Hoffmiester. The L &.
