grab second place whil e Brad Oxley ran third.
The Costa Mesa track had turn ed in to a wide,
blue g roove du r in g t he even ing, a nd as
Schwartz dri fted awa y fro m the po le to sea rch

lead. Schwartz again wen t wid e in the next corner, and Oxley slipped by to take second and set off in purs uit of McConnell. For the remaind er
of the main eve nt Ox ley kept the p ress ure on
McConnell, b ut because both riders were on the
low line and neither mad e a mistake, McConn ell
held on for the w in wi th Oxley finishing a close
second. Cha rlie Venegas also passed Schwartz to
take third while Rob Pfetzing finish ed fifth.
As the riders lined up for the Han d icap ma in
even t, Chism too k up residence on the 2D-yard
line with lD-yard -liners Greg Ayers and jerry
Black in fron t of him. When the gate wen t up,
C hism wa sted no time in wor kin g up to the
fron t-markers and passing them to establish an
early lead . McConnell was searc hing for a sweep
- a rarity at Costa Mesa - and he also qu ickly
passed Ayers an d Black in p u rs uit o f Ch ism .
McConnell ca ug ht up to him , bu t Chism had
established himself on the gro ove and was n't
about to give up the lead. Chis m rolled on to
score the win with McConn ell coming in second.
Edd ie Castro moved through the field from his
s tarting position on the 40·ya rd line to finish
th ird , while fellow 4D-yard -liner Pfe tzing finished fourth and Doug Nicol fifth.
