Venegas fast at Speedway USA By Oren James VICTORVILLE, CA,JUNE 11 Charlie Venegas got the drop on h is competition an d sped to th e Scratch mai n even t v ict ory, while Dustin Evans was able to sta rt ahead and stay ahead for the Handicap featu re win at Gene Woods' Speedway USA. Though he wa s defea te d in two of his Scratch hea ts - once by Ed d ie Cas tro and once by john Ade n - Veneg as looked stro ng in his final Scratch heat of the evening and posted a win to gain mom en tum goi ng in to the ma in event. In the main, Venegas wou ld sta rt on the extreme ou tside in ga te four wit h Ad en to his left, whi le Castr o sat on the pole with jim Estes in gate two. When the tapes flew, Venegas bo lted into the lead with Aden in hot pursuit. Aden tried to stay within strik ing dis tance of Venegas as Castro and Estes fell off the pace, bu t Venegas would not be headed, and he crossed the finish line to take the win by a comfo rtable mar gin. Aden remained second, followed by Castro and Estes. Evans, a forme r motocrosser, has apparently foun d speed way to his liking as ev ide nced by his me teori c rise in the Handicap ra nks . Evans started the Handi cap main on the zero-yard line, andsettled into the po int position after the start. Behind Evans, Aden quickly sliced through the pack from his starti ng posi tion on the 70 until he met up with Ange la Ha le, who came off the 10. From there, Aden and Hale engaged in a battle for the runne r-up positio n tha t allowed Evans to slip away. By the time Aden had cleared Hale, it was too la te to ca tch Eva ns, who we n t o n to score the wi~. Ade n finished secon d, followed by Hale, Venegas and Paul Colston. . Results SCRATCH : 1. More for Morehead at Newsies HM By Bert Sh epard DAYTON, OH JUNE 11 , "It's the biggest little race in the world, and it pays mo re th an a d irt tra ck mile, sa id Stev e Morehea d after the "Find lay Flyer" notched his sixth w in at one of motorcycling 's most prest igio us events - the 24th annual Budweiser Old Time Newsies dirt track race for charity. Th e win for Morehe ad was extra sw eet as he defeated George Roeder II (w inner of the last three Newsies) in the 750cc mai n event and in th e 8t h annua l Edgar Fuh r Dash fo r H C as h . M ore head's wi n also t ied h im w i th Gary Scott as a six- time wi nner of the even t, thoug h Scott's unpreced ent ed five events in a row (1980-1984) will be very d ifficult to du plica te. When the show down that the Ohio dirt track fans had waited for all evening was brought to the track, the questions of the day were: Could Roeder put Morehead away for the fourth year in a row? Would Morehead have h is National or Regional Lady Luck riding with him? Broken eq uip m ent has plagued him on the Nationa l level in '94 . Bu t Lady Luck has bee n m uch kinder to him at Regionals. The answer wo uld come qu ickly, as Roed er 's fron t tire cho ice w ould let him down in tu rns one and two. "The fron t end took off on me and Stevie (Morehead) got away:' said Roeder, who would eventually finish second . . Dave Rayburn rode well in third , his equipmen t fina lly so rted ou t, wi th Jam es Hart, Will Davis and Greg Sims in tow . Dan Butler continued to try to come to terms with the tricky track, but the Michigan rider low-sided in tum three. He was qu ickly up an d away before Morehead and Roeder arrived. With five laps to go, Roeder kept Morehea d ho nest w h ile Rayburn and Si ms battled for thir d. Fifth place was not yet sett led, with Hart and Davis battling over it. With a lap to go, there would be only one change . Sims wo uld get by Rayb urn in tum one and two for a tri p to the ro strum , with Morehead and Roeder crossing the finish line 1·2. The event, wh ich ben efits Big Brothers and Big Bisters of greater Dayton, Ohio, also turned out to be a great one for Les w ashbon, Red l Ha rt and Scott Stump, w ith those th ree rider s victor io u s in th e 600cc Exper t; .P ro· Am an d 883cc main events, respectively. !
