NHRA Springnationals By Todd Veney Motorcycle Asphalt Racing Series:Round 3 Davis mars 'em at Columbus "T 36 COLUMBUS, OH, JUNE 10 his might be the best on e yet then again, I might tell you different in an hour," sa id Will Davis before h e took th e 600cc main event win and the points lead when the Motorcycle Asphalt Racing Series visited Co lumbous Speedway. Terry Poovey , James Hart, Steve Morehead and Robert Lew is gave the crowd something to buzz about as they won the 600cc heat races. Chance Darling earned his ticket to the main with a in the first 600cc semi, while Geoff Clark made the best of a long haul from Hudson, Ohio to win the secondsemi, Poovey to ok the inside po le an d Hart, M orehe ad , Le wis, Davi s a nd Davey Camlin fill ed in the rest of th e front row for the main event. Po ovey, Morehead, Lew is and Hart w ere running 1-2-3-4 during the first lap before Dave Lloy d brought out the red flag with a hay-bale-busting get-off in tum one. Hart h ad the restart wired and led Morehead, Davis, Poovey and Lewis off the line. Davis, wearin g the MARS number-one plate, was in a hurry and got a ro und the outside of Har t to tak e the lead. The race s e para te d into two groups with Davis, H art, Morehe ad, Poo vey and Lewis making up the lead pack. Duane Veeder, G reg Sims and Camlin battled over sixth-place money. With eight laps in the books, Davis had a few lengths on Hart and Morehead while Lewis and Poovey took turns in fourth p lace and Veed er continued to hold Camlin and Sim s a t bay. With si x laps to go, tw o dramatic ch anges took p lace afte r Hart lost the front end in tu rns th ree and fou r and Morehead retired with en gine problems at the same time, bringing out another red flag On the fina l restart, Davis led Lewis, Poovey, Veeder and Camlin. He and his on ly peer, John Myers, the d efending champion at Na tional Trail Raceway, just east of Columbus, Ohio, left the starting line at the same instant with a .433 reaction time. Meyers was in it all the way with a 7.73 /177.09 - better than Schultz h ad run in the two previous rounds - but Schultz w on with his quickest pass of elimi nations, a 7.71/178.50 that tied his e.t. from the first round. Schultz no w lea ds the N HRA Winston points standings by more than 1200 points, or six rounds of racing. "I'm not going to ease up until after this thing is clinched," said Schultz, who trailed Myers by nearly th at m uch at this point last season. "Look at last year. You never kn ow what can happen to a points lead ." Sin ce leavi ng C olumbus after a n upset first-round red -light loss las t year, Schultz has now won nin e of the last 10 N HRA national events and 42 of his 43 round races . He led qualifying for the 1994 Springnationals, but not until the D he's just 15 years old, but a t what was, in effect, the women's ve rsion of the MX des Nations, Kristy Shealy proved to the world that she is th e best woman motocrosser on the planet. The Houston, Texas, resident blasted her way to wins in both the 125 and 250cc Pro Women's classes at the ProLite Tra ilers International Wom en's Cup , hosted by Thund er Mountain Motorplex in East Texas. The AM A-sanctioned event host ed women from around the world, including th e to p three women racers from Italy, and New Zea land 's top female pro, in addition to the best women racers in the United Sta tes . This was also the first time tha t an American has won the coveted Women's Interna tional Cup, which was taken last year by an Italian. Italian Stefania Bau was also in the hunt. "I w as watchi n g my coach, Billy Wh itley, cue me on the race, and I knew there was a battle for second go ing on behind me," said Shealy. "But I just focused on the track and my technique, and concentrated on not making any mistakes." The race for second was a three-way Kawasaki battle. Bau held down the second spot on a KX borrowed from Brad Woolse y, but was h ounded by Wood and Perr y. Not far b ehind was New Zealand 's Shelley Hickman, onan RM borrowed from Chris Torrance. Cristina Marini and Maria Teresa Pegoraro kept Hickman within sight. Wood kep t Bau honest as she hunted d own the Italian for s econd, but the seven -la p race was ov er befo re she co ul d make a se rio u s pass attempt.
