M LAND, ML JUNE 5 ID Glen O'Boyle put a few more gray hairs un der the helm et s of the 40 and ov er Senior rid er s whe n he grabbed the checkered flag at the end of a heart -stopp ing eigh t-lap race for the win at the Midla nd sho rt track. The action remained fast from the heat races to the final, whic h bega n at the green light with a cavalry charge of 12 riders jockeying for a clear shot at the backstretch. Before da ylight could be seen, the red flag flew when Jack Mayer Sr. and Bill Leach collided out of tum two . The Yamaha rid ers bru shed off the incide n t, an d the dust, wit h Leach taking the allotted two minutes to get his bike in better running condi tion. O n th e resta rt it wa s Mark Froe lich, Don Ban nerman , O'Boyle, Pat May, John Zwerican an d Sk ip Wertz in perfect sy nc off the line. O'Bo yle came in between rid ers and int o the lead as they cleared tum two, then jammed his th ro t tl e wi de o pen and h eld o n fo r a rid e. Froelich, Bannerma n and Wertz each moved in for t he challenge, battling each ot he r fo r a chance at the Riverside Ser vice H onda rid er. Froelich gained the adv an tage in lap three, but a handleba r- to-h and leb ar dra g race down the back stretch pu t O'Boyle back on point. Bannerman and Wertz attached themsel ves at the cases behind Froelich and did n' t sep ara te till lap five when Wertz placed his Triumph a length ahead of the Rotax rider. There was a slight gap between the top fou r riders and the rest, with a separate race for fifth place going stro ng behind the leaders involving Mike Fink, Zwerican and May. On lap six, the three-way battle was red uced to a du el w he n May got too sideways to save it. Fink and Zw erica n fo'u gh t till the whi te flag , then Fin k took over and Zwerica n dropped back.
