FAX (310)427-6685 Trial and error After spending several years campaigning the AMA Grand Na tional Championshi p, I finally rea lized my time a nd financ es both needed a brea k. I reti red fr om the sport but still kep t up on it through your excellent coverage. Always the competitor, I still felt the need to compete and found a new home racing speedway three nights a week in Northern California. After marrying and having two wonderful children, once again my time and finances needed a break. Again, I kept involved with the sport through the pages of my favorite motorcycling newspaper. I have recently stumbled across another form of competition. The bug was still there an d I knew I had to give it a try . The sport I am referrin g to is trials, a nd until rec ently I haven't seen much coverage about it in any of the motorcycling press. My first event was at Moon Rocks, Nevada, and I can honestly say that I have never met a nicer bunch of people. The course wa s awesome, twisting through tight sand washes and then sending you catapulting up giant rocks and boulders w hi ch even some of the local iguanas might ha ve trouble making. I am very pleased to see that this year you r coverage of the sport has increased and I hope it w ill continue to do so. Hopefully, man y of yo ur readers w ill come out and watch the world round at Donner and see first hand what I'm talking abo ut . They'll be clearing obstacles that would mak e a supercross track look like a sand box. publication that recognizes the excitement that modem tr ials b rings to the sport of motorcycling. I remember read ing a co m m e nt a few yea rs back in another p ublicati on th at sai d observed trials was like "watching grass grow. " I personally challenge that small-mind ed editor to attend th e Wo rld Rou nd a t Donner Pass. He will wi tness some of the most spectacular rid ing that one can see. I know Cycle News will be the re, with great coverage and pho tos th e week after the event! Thanks, Cycle News, for showin g the country that there's more to dirt bikes than the latest motocrossers. Keep up the good work! Guy Fasanaro Vacaville, CA We bet you really liked this week's cover! Look for a Dougie Lampkin interview in an upcoming issue... Editor. Renaissance Man I want to personally applaud your fine publication for the increased coverage of World, National a nd Reg ional tria ls events. Cycle News is the only National Congratulations to Cycle News for printing what I believe was a tribute to the finest motocross mechanic that there could possibly be - Brian Lunniss (Issue #2 1, Ju ne 1, 1994). Lunn iss is to mo tocross wh at Vince Lombardi was to football . The greatest achievement tha t any p rofessional rac er could hope for would be to ha ve him as their mechanic. Withou t a d oubt, I am sure tha t Hannah, Joh nson a nd Brad s h a w wo u ld agree. Although yo u r article d isp la yed Brian's professional side, what you also captured was his personal involvement wi th an yone who he wrenches for . It see ms tha t he is one with his rider. When the rider gets hurt, he also ge ts hurt, When the rider loses, he feels the same loss, and when the rider makes a mistake, he lets them know it. Brian is a trainer, mentor, father image and faithfu l friend to whoever is fortunate eno ugh to work with him . Brian is actually a legend to this sport and all that participate would agree. He is as importa n t to the h istory of motocross as any rider. He has my nomination to the Motocross Hall of Fame. Thanks for the article. It was en ligh t- FEATURES ening, encouraging and refreshing to finally read about one who has deserved such recognition for quite sometime. Denny Trask Macedon, NY Get a clue How far has the sport of motorcycle racing come since the days of Brando and the Wild One? Apparently - in the eyes of the AMA - not far at all. I'm referring to the recent ABC Television m ovie Ride Like the Wind, which depicted motorcycle racers as out of shape, drinking, pill-popping low-Iifes. Give me a break. Since when do racers at any level show up at the races in a broken-down pick-up truck? This is only one example of the stereotypical reputation that racers ha ve had to endure since day one. It's going to be very difficult for me to renew my AM A card for the 15th· straight year to an organization that will sell ou t to get their name mentioned on prime time lV. I realize that the days of Bruce Brown are over, but do you really think the parents of a kid wanting to get into motorcycle racing are going to support him after viewing such trash? Get a clue.
