Ca rroll Shelb y Racing 's Brian Maxwell . stuffed his Ho nda into the lead during heat one, heading Elliott Iverson, Tyson Voll and Ledbet ter. Iverson bumped into the back of Maxwell, sta llin g his own Wood-Rotax a nd leaving sec ond to Voll. Ledbetter then p roceeded to make his way around both riders and wen t gunning for Maxwell, leaving the Honda rider in second. Jim Rust pulled in behind Voll, passing him for thir d . Voll was followed by Dave Brant. Brant lau nched into the lead of the seco nd heat , tailed by fellow Yamaha rider Mike Fenlson , Ledbetter, Ma xwe ll and Rick Schroeder. Fenison soon fell prey to the more experienced riders, and dropped back. Ledbetter an d Maxwell pulled in behind Brant, who relin qu ished the lead to Led b e tt e r o n la p two. Maxwell and Schroeder followed, keeping the leader in sight. Voll mo ved into fourth. leaving fifth to Brant. Maxwell took the point at the st art of th e Open Expert main with Ledbetter at his side. Jim Rus t overshot the comer, hitting Ledbetter and planting himse lf firmly in tum four. Rust got a rid e to the hospital and was later released . , After the track was cleared, everyone lined up for a tot al res tart. Maxwell, Led be tter and Schroeder led the field around the track, with all riders staying shiny side up this time. Ledbetter took his Wood -Rolax outside of Maxwell on the back straight, leaving the Honda rider wondering what had happened. John Dupree took third away from Schroeder, and Iverson snagged ruth from Brant, but Voll was charging and passed Iverson for the fifth spot. Up front, Ledbetter continued to pull away and scored th e win, trailed by Maxwell and Dupree. Marv in Moo re ba ttled Brett Bemis in the 250cc Expert ma in. Brian Shirl ey came from midpack to take the 85cc main event and quickly became the fans ' favorite rider during the two days of racing. Ten ri de rs lined up for th e 85ec main on Mon d ay, amo ng them so me considered to be among the best in the nation. Sunday's fast-hea t and ma in-event winner Nick Williams lined up second from the outside pol e, with Roger Lee Hayden on his right and Shirley to his left. Josh Toungett chose the inside pole, and from that position pulled the holeshot and led the field into tum one. Ha yden was on Toungett's rear tire an d made repeated attempts to get by him before ma king a pass stick go ing into tum one on la p two. The third thro ugh fifth place riders, Williams, Shi rley, and John Spinelli, were on ly three bike lengths back in a very tight pack. " Toungett repassed Hayden coming ou t of tu m four on the sa me lap, only to hav e Ha yd en ta ke back the first positi on goin g into the firs t tum of the next lap . Shirley made an ins ide pass on Williams between three and four on lap three a nd began to battle hard with Tou ngett. Hayd en had gotten about a ten bike-length lead, but the battle between Toungett and Shirley brought them right up on Hayden's rear at tum three on lap five. Toungett slipped mome ntarily coming out of four, and Shirl ey slid into the second pos ition. A seco nd pass attempt on Hayden by Shirley on the sixth lap - an inside pass between three and four - proved to be a winner. Shirley pulled out to a five bike- length lead at the checkers.
