Sims smokes Myrtle Beach Half-Mile By Dave Hoenig Photo by Flat Trak Fotos MYRTLE BEACH. SC. MAY21 reg Sim s topped th e 750cc cla ss whe n the Motorcycle Asphalt Racin g Series returned to th e bulletfas t high banks of th e My r tle Beach Speed way fo r round tw o of 1994 . A small but talen ted field of ride rs greeted the lar ge crowd on han d for the Carolina Harley-Dav idson Dealer -sponsored races that were held in conjunction with th e 54th annua l Grand St rand Bik e Rally. The premier class. the 750, wen t to Sims after a spec tacular ru n by Rusty Rogers, who used up his re ar tire tw o laps from the end of the 12-lap main. "After the first coupl e of laps, we settled in to a pret ty steady pace. 1 was s ta yi ng close, and Ru s ty w as reall y burning his tire ," said the Marine Transport/Mid west Racing / Proffer 's /Bell / AXO / Sp rocket Sp ec. /Kal-Ga rd / Te x Peel-sponsored Sims. The wi n was worth over $2400 to Sims, whi le Rogers coupled his secondplace fin ish with a 600cc class win to pocket over $3300. In the 750cc main, Rand y Texter led the thundering pack into tum one over Sims, who took over at the end of lap one only to have Rogers storm by to lead lap two. Rogers was spectacular until, with two laps remaining, Sims was on Rogers' bald back tire. Sims took over on the white-flag lap and Roge rs was grateful to ho ld on for second. "I never should have taken the lead so early. That tire is down to the cords; there's nothing left," Rogers said. "I didn't think his tire could last, but 1 was starting to wonder when all of a sudden 1 caught him ," Sims said. "Then 1 was able to just ride by." Will Davi s, who along with Kevin Varnes was riding one of Johnny Goad's Team Undo Honda RS75Os, had moved up through the pack into third and closed on Sims, only to run into a problem. Unlcnownst to anyone, Sims' oil tank had developed a small leak. . "At first 1 thought 1 had moisture on my shield from the cold. Then 1 noticed it wasn't running down," Da vis said . "After 1 slipped couple of 1 had to back off." - "Davis's temporary teammate, Varnes, was unaffected as he worked his wa y up from deep in the field and took th ird awa y on the last lap , while Sims rolled on to the win ahead of Davis. Texter topped a close race for fifth over Kris Kiser and Chan ce Darling. As the 600cc main was s tagi n g, s moke rolled from Davis' s Harley . A blown head gasket doomed the RogersDavis rematch. Varnes got the holeshot but Rog ers too k ov er at th e halfway point. From there on, the race belonged to the H-D of Frederic k /Mathews H D/J&M Frames /L-Tec / Airco / Bell / ESAB /Team Wickersham /C&P Racing /HS Racing-sponsored Rog ers . AMA 600cc N ational Championship Series: Round2 Wincewicz WOWS em at Bellingham J BELLINGHAM, WA, MAY 21 ix-time champ Ch ris Carr may not ha ve been on hand a t Hannegan Sp eedwa y for r ound tw o o f the 600cc Nation a l Ch am pionship Series, but the racin g action was spectacular, no netheless. A slew of home-sta te riders took full ad va ntage of Carr's abse nce, and Washingtonians filled fou r of th e top five positions -.Lead ing the way was Lace y, Washingt on 's John Wincew icz . After a tooth-and-nail battle wi th forme r fac tory H ond a rider Mickey Fay, the Harley-David son of Tacoma / Lou Kinis h/ Belli Ada m s MC Supp ly / Do u g O 'B rian Racing /Dirt Track Number plates /White Bros .-spons o red r id er raced home wi th the first 600cc National win of his career. " This is rea ll y exci ting," sa id Wincewicz, 33. "This is something that I've been tryi ng to do for a long time." Fay held on to finis h a close second aboard his PeiroIli Racing /Dow nt own Harl e y- Da vi ds o n / Ma xi ma / Pr o Sp o rt s /B e ll /Hi n sh a w ' s Honda /Joe McCoy / Vince Holt/ Scott / Works Performance/Jim Roseth/Tom Hou seman backed Rota x, whil e Rick Hocki ng rounded out the podium aboard a Budweiser/ Soun d Beverage/Brian Billingssponsored Rotax. An estimated crowd of 1600 spectators showed up for the Mt. Baker Motorcycle Club-promoted event, and were kepron the edges of their se ats as Wincewicz and Fay d id battle on the fast, tacky short track. For his win, Wincewicz earned $2000 of the $10,000 purse, while Fay and H ocking were awarded $1500 and $800, respectively. Wincewicz now sits in a tie for the series points lead with defending champ Carr, who won the series-opening Da ytona Short Track. All in all, the top 10 finishers at Hannegan were entirely di fferent than the top 10 at Daytona, thus resulting in a multitude of ties in the series points. With only four rounds in the '94 600cc series, it looks as if the rider who simply attends the m ost races has a good chance of being crowned champion . The loss of the series ' pres tige is quite sad, as the 600s are well known for producing some of the best d irt-track racing available. Four 10-lap h ea t races and three eight-lap semis de termined who would race in the ma in, and who would be sen t packing. Fay, Jeff Annen, Dan Stanley and Wincew icz topped the hea t ra ces, with Wincew icz's being the fastest by a co m fort able margin . Dan McDon nell, Ru ss Yamamoto a nd Rex Fisher won their semis . Po le-si tte r Wincewicz wasted little time ta ki ng control when th e 25-1a p main event got underway, and led Stanley, Fay and Hocking past the start/finish line to begin lap one. Fay was on the move, howev er, and d isp laced Stanle y on lap tw o. Once into second, Fay set his sights on Wincew icz, and shadowed the S (A bove) Ben] 1 Kerscher (27K) leads Jim Sumner (45) at the Azta lan short track. (Below) Greg Sims wo n t he MARS 750cc ma in event at Myrtle Beach Speedway after Rusty Rogers (not shown) used up his rear t ire too qu ickly. lead er for tw o laps before making his bid for the lead. Fay overtook Wincewicz and s tole th e le ad on la p six, and many in th e stands expected the number 13 rider to run away with an easy win . Wincewicz had o ther ideas , however, and kept plugging away. Fay opened up a lead tha t at on e point s tre tched to si x or seven bike lengths, but as the race wore on, he bega n to tire. "Well, 1 guess you could say that my age was starting to catch up with me," said the likable 35-year-old . "1 was riding up top and haulin' ass, but when 1 sta rted to get tired I moved back down to the po le and he caught me." Wincewicz passed the fading Fay on lap 18, and raced home with the win. "1 got such an adren aline rush after passing Mickey tha t I think 1 rode faster in the last five laps than 1did in the first five ," sai d Winc ewicz. "1 could jus t smell the checkered flag." Fay stayed glued to the leader's rear fend er, bu t cou ld n ' t mus ter enough energy to retake the lead. Hocking, mean while, got the best of th e rem ain de r of th e field and nabbed thi rd, nearly a straightaway behind the lead d uo.
