MAY 14 Any Rider Kawasaki-sponsored Dann y Paladino took three overall victories in cludin g th e 125 and 2SOcc Pro classes during the opening round of th e Clawson Mot ors p o r ts Racin g /Q J0 6 FM/Califom ia Motocross Associa tion's Boun ty Hun ter Stad iumcross Series at the Los Ban os Fairgro unds . When the gat e d ropped for the 125cc Pro class, Pa ladi no took the holeshot w ith jeffrey Bro wnl ee in second and Mark Klauser in th e th ird p osit ion. Palad in o tried to mot or a wa y from Brownlee , but was unable to open up too lar ge a gap. Brownlee kep t Paladino in his sights and waited for him to mak e a m istake. It wa s not to happen , with Palad ino rid ing flaw lessly to th e ch eckered flag a nd Brownlee n ot fa r behi nd in second. Klau ser finished in the th ird posi tion. In the second mote, Palad ino again qu ickly es tab lis he d him self as the lead er o f the race. Brownlee and Klause r cou ld only do their bes t to keep Palad ino in check . Brownl ee kept on the gas and p ress ure d Palad ino for a few laps, but he bo bb led when exiting the rocker sectio n a t the fins h-line tum, w hich allowed Paladino to accelerate aw ay and sail to the vict ory with a large ma rgin. KIauser tri ed to close in on Brownlee, but the order had been se t. Paladino took the overa ll, wi th Bro wnlee second a nd Klauser th ird . Paladino conti nued his moto-winn ing streak with a victory in the first 2SOcc Pro moto. Paladino pulled the holesh ot w ith john Cook, Keith Mayes, [on Nico laus and Tony Flores in tow . Cook, n u rsing an inju red ankle/foot, was not long in the front. Difficulties due to his injury popped up and he was una ble to hold his position. Mayes contin ued to hold off N icola us , while Ham ilton also moved into the thick of the acti on. By lap four, Hamilton had ta ken over third as Nicolaus had go tten out of shape over the rockers and gone down. Paladino, in the mean time, was on his way to the ch eck er ed flag. Mayes kept the second spot w hile Hamilton held th ird and Flores rode a consisten t fourth. Nicolaus was credited w ith the fifth spo t at the close of moto one. Paladino once again wasted little time heading for the top spot in mo to tw o by grabbing an other holesh ot. N icolaus ran secon d, with Cook th ird and Mayes fourth. Rounding ou t the top five at the com pletion of lap one was Brett Hamilton . Within the first few lap s, Coo k wou ld p ull out of the race after a few hard land ings. Mayes took over third , while Nicolau s held his ground in second . It was n't long, though , before Mayes found hi s w ay around N icol a us for se co n d . H am ilt o n, w ho h ad been riding fo u rt h , also ove rtoo k Nicolaus, for th ird , then bega n a battl e wi th Mayes for the second position. Both Hamilton and Mayes raced. togeth er for the rema ining laps , with Ha m ilto n comin g ou t on top. Th e q u le t., "get th e job done " Palad in o took ye t a not h er rna to win to secu re the overall in the 2SOcc Pro class. Ben Vitale. ; or or Nelson bombards Barona MX By Scott Hofftnan RAMONA, CA, MAY 8 Team Green-ba cked Dustin Nelson swep t both the 125 and 2SOcc Intermediate classes as CMC went south to Barona Oaks Raceway for round fou r o f the Su ns ta r Sp rocket s Sp rin g Cla ssic Nationals . Early mornin g showers pu t the race in jeopardy, bu t as the da y p rogressed, the track conditions improved to make an exciting da y of raeing. In the first 125cc mote , Cory Bender held the top spot while Travis Presto n, Angelo Ingrande an d Dustin Nelson pu rsued. Bend er kept the lead for the first half of the race before Preston and Nelson freight-trained pas t to take over as Ingrand e fell back on the opening lap. With Preston and Nelson out front , the race for the top spot heated up . With the final laps in sigh t, Nelson was hot on the trail of Preston but was n't a ble tocomplete the pass. At the fini sh , the ord er remained the same : Pres ton, Nelson and Bender. In the seco nd moto it was all Nelson. Bende r rep ea ted his fir st -m o te ho lesh ot, b u t Ne lson quickly dropped him back one spot an d started to put some time on the field . First -m ot e winne r Pres ton su ffere d a crash in a 25Oc( mota a nd was unable to make the second moto. .Bende r held off a charge from Ingrande to take second, but when the checkered flew it was Nelson with a n unchall en ged victory , follow ed by Ben de r and Ingrande. In the 250cc Intermediate class, Nelso n took the victory by a slim margin, po sting 3-1 moto finishes. Turtle Wikoff grabbed a pair of runnerup finishes to tie Nelson in points, but seco nd mot a resul ts gave the wi n to Nelson. Preston won the first moto and fought back har d in the second race before cras hing on the last lap. In the U Scc Pro cla ss, Timmy Staufenbeil a nd joe l Alb rec h t swappe d moto w in s, w it h Albrec ht takin g the overall In the first moto jeff Tilton lead early, but Staufenbeil and Albrecht we re rig h t t h e re a n d quickly mo v ed p a s t. Stau fenbeil rode a strong race to take the win , followed by Albrecht, Tilton and Craig Mason. In the second race it was all Albrecht; he had a clear track il) front of him from the drop of the ga te to the finish. Staufenbeil and Tilton took the runner-up spots. Results Jacob Poole (Yam ); 2. MAY 15 Broo k Fluker rod e har d and hand ily captured the Open Expert Win during the Arkansas State MX Championships at the Ca me lbac k 11 race track. Open Ex p e r t action bega n w it h Te xa n Michael Gage pu ttin g his Suzuki in front in both mo tos while Roger Ew ing an d Brook Flu ker tailed on their Kawasa kis. Fluker dogged Ewing thro ugh several tu rns before flying past over the camelback jump. Fluker p ulled h is MSR/Dun lop /Rock Oil / FMF /TUF/Sp roc ket Speci alist / Scott / Bell/KX Sports Cen ter-backed KX2S0 up to Gage 's rear fend er as they en tered a tight lefthander before the back whoop section. Flu ker th en too k th e le a d th rou gh th e wh oop s. Gates hun g on Fluker's rear whl-el for three laps , doggin g him in eve ry tum, but fluker was faster throu gh the rough stuff and pulled away sligh tly on every lap. Gage w ould pull back up over the jumps and slip by over a set of sma ll dou bles to ret a ke the lead , but Fluker stayed less than a bi ke len gth behind. Fluker again took the lead thro ugh the back whoop section as Ga tes got a little out of canto!. With onl y a few laps to go, Fluker tripl ed to pu t some distance between hi mself and Ga ge and we nt on for th e win. ·Moto two saw Gage again grab the holeshot with Fluker beh ind Ewing . Fluker was able to ge t p ast Ewing before th e secon d turn a n d pa ssed Gage th rou gh the wh oop s aga in. Thi s time Fluke r kep t the lead with Gage cha llenging for tw o laps be fore backing off. Ewing made a last-lap charge to try and bat tle with Gage for second, but Gag e wicked it up and held on to finish second behind Fluker; Ewing was third. Freddie Mitchell was the only do ub le class winner a t the Arkansas Sta te Champ ions h ips, held at the Pine Bluff MX facility, sweeping the 125cc Intermedi ate and Open Amateu r classes. Though moto one of the Open Amat eur class began wi th a p icture-perfect holeshot by jason En n is , m i sf o rtun e s tr uc k qu ick ly as En nis end oed after a spectacular tank-slapper during the first lap. Mitchell cruised around to win the moto, and was unchallenged in moto two later in the da y to take the class hono rs.
