Jeff Colbert and Jay Mercill se ttled in behind for the d ura tion of the race, bu t Bense wo n withou t mu ch trouble. Scott Stein le dis placed Steve Tuom ela ea rly in th e mot a to tak e fourth, and maintained that position un til the flag fell. As the ga te dropp ed on the second mot o, Bense and Colbert once again ju mped out front on their 250s. Mercill and Steinle, rid ing 125 and Open bikes, respecti vely, batt led over third. The lead du o went on to repea t their first-moto finishes. Mercill held on for the fust three laps , but Steinle eventua lly wore h im d own a n d too k third. Tuomela trailed Mercill to take fifth. The 125cc A class was the most competitive of the da y. In the firs t moto, Bensep ulled anothe r holeshot to take the lea d . Mercill a nd Lee Erickson emerged in second and third and ma in tained those positions for the first th ree laps. Then Mercill started to fade a bit. and the riders behind dosed in on hi m. Erickso n took ove r second briefly , but Jim Povoln y was charging. and after dis pa tching Me rcill rig ht befo re the wh ite flag. we nt on to ta ke second away from Erickso n. Mike Atkinson and Jason Kem pel passed Merci ll on the last lap to nail do wn the remaining top-five positions. Atkinson rounded the first tu m in the lead of the second moto with Mercill in his wake . By the end of the first lap, Kempe l and Povolny were established in third and fourth, while Bense had moved to fifth after a med iocre start. Atkinson maintained a rapid pore out fron t, whi le Kempel pressured Mercill and Bcnse attacked Povo lny. Kempel got Mercill on the second lap, and a sho rt time later Bense dov e by Povoln y on the inside of a tum. Bense then pu t on a burst of speed through a w hoop section to tak e th ird from Merci ll on the next lap, and the top thr ee positions we re set. Kempel ma naged to close in on Atk inson, but came up a few bik e lengths short at the end.
