Ortner overpowers Ocala MX
By Kyle Myers
OCALA. F1., APR. 24
Jon Ortner once again trounced the competition
at rou nd eig ht of the Florid a Motoc ross Cl ub
Series at the Florida Motocross Complex. Ortner
won both the 25+ and 30+ classes for the second
weekend in a row.
When the flrSt 25+ class left the line , Wyn
Kern jumped ou t to the early lead over Ortner,
Steve Dumond, Steve Dye an d Alan Drahgin.
Kern fell on the opening lap, and Ortner inherited the lead. But Kern quickly remounted and
sta rted to ch a rge back up through the field,
mot orin g by Dragh ain a nd Dye, but then fell
aga in, ending his day. The H onda·Ka wasaki Suzuki of Ocala /Performance Engineeringbacked Ortner now enjoyed a hug e lead that he
would hold until the finish over Dumond, Dye,
Drahgin and Mike MorthIand. who benefitted
from Kern retiring from the mota.
Ortner again took the holeshot to start the
second mota, with Dye, Dumond, an d Drahgin
foll owing. O r tn e r left t he fie ld b e h in d , as
Dumond and Dye battl ed for second. Dumond
slipped by Dye at the halfwa y point, but Ortner
had built up an IS-second lead . Ortner took the
overall ahead of Du mond, Dye, Drahgin an d
Morthland.
Ortner returned later an d topped bo th 30+
mo tos over Mitch Holstein, Steve Dixon, Gary
Emerson and Robert Armstrong.
Jeff Neilander also won two classes. His first
win came in the 15-24 d ivision where he topped
both mo tos. In the 25Oa: B event Steve Dum ond
Reyes runs rampant
atStarwest Motocross
By David A. Procida
MORENO VAllEY. CA, APR. 23
Actio n in the 12Scc Beginner class was fast a nd
furious as Mark Reyes rode the whee ls off his
CR12S to take a pai r of m ot a wins d urin g
round four of the Starwest Season Opener
Series.
Reyes cam~ smoking ou t of the gate to gra b
the holeshot in the first mot a with Cory Gibbons, Justin Duda and Steve Delheney hea ding
the pack. Reyes wide-open course allowed him
to pull away frOm Gibbons. Duda and Delheney
had been join ed by Wi lliam Ziegler, a nd the
three of them were go ing at it for third. Delh eney went ·for an outside line, rail-t he-berm
type pass only to have Duda shut the door exiting the tum.
On th e next comer Delh en ey do ve un derneath Duda , only to have the KX rider ou t-jump
him to retake the posi tion. On the next go-round
Delhen ey a ttempted the inside line again, only
this lime it was alm ost disastrous as the Honda
pilot clipped Duda's rear tire wi th his front This
bob ble cost him a couple of bike lengths, but no
positions were lost Although Zeigler was close
by, he couldn' t react fast enough to imp rove on
his positi on.
The moto carne to an end wi th the top five
positions in tact and roundin g out th e top 10
were Kyle Baird, Jason Coleman, Howey Erickson, Roy Pantoja and Jeff Hewi tt.
It was another Reyes holeshot starting off the
second moto. This lime he drifted a little wide in
the tum, Gibbons sneaked underneath, and for a
minute it looked as if he had the lead. But Reyes
quickly corrected the situation by launchi ng his
CR high over the long table- top jum p and powering away from Gibbons with the lead .
Reyes had opened up a safe ma rgin over the
runner-up slot held by Gibbons; a short distance
back was Co leman, then Zeigler and his shadow, Delheney. Gibbons turned up the afterburners, closing in on Reyes. With two laps remain ing, Gibbons was all over Reyes loo king for a
way around, knowing if he took the moto win it
would mean the overall, too.
A last -la p bob b le by Gibbons gave Reyes
the breathing room to style over the finish line
ju mp and take his seco nd mota win,. as well as
the overall victory. Gibbons managed to retain
secon d by mere inches, but hold on h e di d .
Coleman, Zieg ler and Delhe ney foug ht it out
aU over again in this mote and broke into the
top five.

Bailey takes five
at Dogtown Motocross
By Bart Wilber
ALTAMONT, TN, APR. 17
On April IS and 16 MX professor Gary Bailey
came to the Dogtown MX track to hold a
school. Professor Ba iley was appa ren tly a n
excelle nt teach er, as his students came up with
five wins the following day and a total of ten
trophies.
One of the best races of the da y came in the
125cc A class when Johnny Shields came off the
line in first place followed by Bryan Gilliam and
Scotty Graves. With Sh ields out fron t, Graves
was able to cut under Gilliam and start his chase
for first place. Graves was able to catch Shields,
and the following two laps were close as the two
ri ders ba ttl ed to see wh o wou ld com e out of
each comer first. On the th ird lap of this intense
ba ttle, Gra ves made a b lock-p ass th a t stalled
Sh ield s' cha rge and relegated h im to sec ond
place.
Graves pulled out to a several second lead,
while Shields and Gilliam lost time in their bid
for sec ond place. Gra v es too k the wi n w it h
Gil liam a nd Sh ield s finishing in secon d and
third, respectively.
In the second mota, Graves was able to grab
the holesh ot and pull away for the wi n whil e
Sh ields an d Gilli am again battled for sec ond
place. Shields was second at the start, but was
able to hold off Gilliam for only two laps before
he found a fast line ove r the step-up jump that
allowed him to pass Shields ove r the trip le jump
further down the course, thus securing second
place in mota two. Shiel ds wound up third once
more.
