Faria fast at Costa Mesa Spdwy

COSTA MESA. CA. APR. 29
After five weeks of coming up empty, two-time
US. National Speedway Champion Mike Faria
finally got a little luck and used his advantage to
capture top honors in the Scratch main event at
Costa Mesa Speedway.
Faria's short win draught was nothing compared to that of former British National League
returnee Doug Nicol, who wo n the Handicap
main. When questioned after the event, Nicol
claimed he could not recall his last Main event
win at Costa Mesa , but he was certain it must
have happened ·way bade.·
For the first time since the opening night of
the season. there would be no riders lined up
across the SO-yard line in the eigh t-man Handicap main event. Ten yards closer to the start/ finish line on the 40 were veterans Robert Pfetzing.
Shawn McConn ell and Brad Oxley . The 3O-yard
line was filled to the maximum with Jim Estes,
Eddie Cas tro , Gary Ackroyd and N icol. Steve
Furman roun ded out the field, alone on the 20yar d line.
The field was immediately red uced to seven
riders when Oxley suffered mechanical prob1ems and had to sit on the infield. As the ga te
went up , Nicol took off towa rd the inside of tum
one, aniving there simultaniously with Furman,
who gave way and settled into second place.
Castro had other ideas for second place. taking it
away for good with a wild move in tum three.
From there on out. Nicol tried to hold on for all
eight laps, with Castro tryin g to catch him. Nicol
managed to take the win, and Castro ma intained
seco n d just ahead of a charg in g McCo n n ell .
Estes was credited with fourth, and fifth wen t to
. Ackroyd.
. Faria put his pole starting position to good
use in the Scratch main event, outgating the field
on hi s new Jerry's Sports Bar / Sh oe i /
Oilzall/Srott/Bill's Pipes /Zack's Disposal Service-backed Jawa. After Bobby Schw artz wa s
moved back to the 1o-yard line for touching the
taP"!!, there was little doubt as to the out come of
the race when the group of vete rans left the line
and negotiated the first se t of tu rns. PfelZing
gated second with Gary Hicks right on his tail,
while Josh Larsen ran out of room and went
wid e, falling to the back of the pack. Schwartz
moved in front of Larsen on the final lap, but
was repassed by Larsen halfway to the checkered flag. Faria won. with Pfetzing second and
Hicks third.

Former National Hare Scrambles Champion

Series contender Robert Patterson was present and ready to do battle with his closes t challen ger, Doug jones, but the battle never happened because Jones never made it to the races

already belonged to Pallerson due to Jones's
